There wasn't a single billionaire until the early 20th century. Rockefeller, I think, was the first dollar billionaire.
That is to be taken with a grain of salt, because that's a Dollar equivalent metric and it is not accounting for Inflation. 1 billion today might have been the equivalent of a few hundred dollars 300-400 years ago. Entire mational budgets were sometimes measured in the 1000s of gold coins. On the other hand, during the hyperinflation in Germany, there were millions of >
That doesn't matter. As he and other of his category have proven, they can get whatever money they want, be it liquifying assets or loans on the basis that he has those assets. Does he have 44 billion dollar under his pillow? No. But when he wants to spend 44 billion on an ego project, he has them.
Your argument somehow only applies in practice, when its about paying taxes.
Money is made out of paper, lol. Billionaires do not have liquidity problems. Banks can and will loan them money at or near 0% interest so they don't have to sell their shares. These guys are rich enough to buy the banks after all. It wouldn't cost much more to buy Deutsche Bank than to buy Twitter. SoFi is cheaper than Twitter was.

The category of a billionaire isn't an absolutely useful historical concept outside of our current era.

And he is this only on paper. He cannot bill out this amount like Dagobert Duck. If he tries to sell his shares the system would collapse.

This argument doesn't work well after he was able to buy Twitter without much consequences for his wealth.
