It really wasn't a terrible idea for UI but they handled the PR for it 100% wrong and then decided the way to fix that was to universally push it as the solution for all UI and that was way more dumb.

My first smartphone was a Nokia Lumia... used it from 2015 - 2019. Been using a Samsung A20 since 2019, lol... Also, they don't make small smartphones anymore ffs...

Honestly wasn't the worst UI idea....
Until they tried to make every Windows PC use it by default.
I would honestly rather go back to MS DOS at that point.

Had a Lumia with Windows 8.1.
To this day, the best phone I ever had. The tile interface was actually great for a smartphone.
It was snappy, fast, the camera was an absolute beast for its time.
The only problem was app availability.

Their design philosophy for Windows Phone's OS was basically "you get a notification, you pick up your phone, do what you need, then put it away".
Really good philosophy, I enjoyed my time with it.
One neat side benefit to it being unpopular though: all those websites that on Android and iOS are like "nope, you have to use our app", on Windows Phone they were like "Oh. Ok, yeah, you can use our website."
