I know a real piece of shit guy at work who is a Trumper, he tried desperately to get some kind of federal job in his administration. Whenever he's in a photo for an event or anything else, he takes off his glasses and mean mugs the camera like that photo on the right, as if he's truly super tough instead of an insecure racist. Except they can, but the fact that we don’t “get it” just shows how much the two groups of people have diverged. If you look at conservative subreddits or whatever, they say “the left can’t meme”.
A meme is just the ability to convey a concept through a common history, the fact that we don’t “get” the meme is like looking at a meme from a foreign country and not getting it. It’s like not understanding an idiom.
Not understanding their memes just goes to show how far we’ve been divided.

The problem is that the root of comedy is empathy - we joke about shared experiences to bond over those experiences because life is absurd and we reconcile absurdity with humour. In order to be good at humour, you need to have a strong sense of how others process your shared experiences.
Conservatives are bad at ALL forms of humour because they are incapable of empathy. Their "jokes" are really just bullying as they try to laugh over shared prejudices.

The _mechanism_ of comedy is subverting expectations, but you need empathy to understand expectations. You can't know what counts as "subversion" if you don't understand how the audience parses the world around them.
It's like how there's an objective, empirical science to cooking, but you can't cook a satisfying meal if you don't know what people enjoy and why. That's why nobody reacts receptively to "eat this, it's nutritionally balanced".
