Also.....there are...FOR PROFIT...libraries? Aren't those called book stores?
NORWICH, Conn. (AP) — The U.S. State Department has ordered certain public libraries nationwide to cease processing passport applications, disrupting a long-standing service that librarians say their communities have come to rely on and that has run smoothly for years.
The agency, which regulates U.S. passports, began issuing cease and desist orders to not-for-profit libraries in late fall, informing them they were no longer authorized to participate in the Passport Acceptance Facility program as of Friday.

Whatdoyousaytoanicecupoftea
They're not "processing" passports though, are they? They're assisting with applications and providing photocopying and the like.
Processing is being used as a weasle word to imply illegal activity.
FUCK EM
Whatdoyousaytoanicecupoftea
For example. My local library "processed" me copying and notifying my birth certificate FOR an application

Target the people passing laws to take your vote away. Hunt them until they are gone.

This is a multi generational, non stopping thing. I'm not disagreeing with you. Hunt and kill them whenever they pop up.

Arent all libraries non profit?
Californiajackson
Genuine question: I don't fully understand why not voting favors Republicans. Why are the majority of non voters presumed to be Democrats? Do fewer Democrats have passports? Do fewer Democrats have married names that don't match their birth certificates? Why is suppressing the vote worse for Dems?
Onebigcanuck
Rural areas tend to favor Republicans and there are a lot more of those than urban areas. Add in voter suppression and gerrymandering, tips the voting outcomes to give rural areas more weight hought they have far less population.
SisyphusRollin
Trump also carried married women both times I believe, they'd be hit hard with this. He'd be losing more than gaining, its short sighted bullshit pushed by racists and sexist cunts.
Merkonian
It is complicated but due to the system the US has with electors and the electoral college and the district based first past the post only some areas matter. It doesn't matter if Republican votes in California are suppressed. It will be Democratic anyways. But in certain purple states suppressing some groups in combination with gerrymandering will tip the scale in favor of Republicans.
Tarmaccian
Demographics.
Wealthy white people are more likely to have passports, birth certificates (and paperwork, supporting a name change), and no trouble getting to the polls. They also vote more Republican.
Disadvantage people more likely can’t afford new IDs, are missing old paperwork, or can’t escape work to go vote in person. They more likely vote Democrat.
Raising barriers cuts off more Democrat than Republican voters, so it tilts the balance in the fascists’ favor.
Xenarion
Typically minorities are poor, for a multitude of reasons all stemming from racism, and said minorities tend to vote Democrat for rational reasons.
ZackWester
and as many poor dont travel abroad or have thought of travel abroad they dont have passport... Passport is/was a popular ID to vote. before it was driving license but many place have not scraped that as a valid ID leaving only passport and as the lower class dont travel at all Passport is not something affordable.
NinjablazerZero
When it comes to non-white non voters, they are most likely to not vote Republican. Preventing minority groups and women from voting means that Democrat and left lose more voters than Republican loses by a wide margin. This is known from historical voting data and polling.
This is aimed at hurting minorities and women, because yes, minority groups tend to have less access to passports, birth certificates and the like.
somerandomusernamebecauseididntlikemyoldone
They are seeking to restrict those who they don't see as people (probably because they are less likely to vote for them) from voting, the poor (which in the US also include a lot of minorities given socioeconomic factors) and women. It's also why voting open times, time off from work to vote, public transportation, etc. are things they attack. It's definitely just a step in the direction they want. Also the save act makes registering harder and more time consuming, so less young voters.
azazyel
1: They feel Republicans are more motivated to vote (Doubt it's true) 2: They don't want ANY women to vote, 19th amendment is being targeted
SisyphusRollin
You're not wrong on the fact this will have hard backlash and is likely short sighted. They'll lose a large portion of their own female votes, and the passports would directly hurt them. https://securedemocracyusa.org/report/republican-voters-would-be-disproportionately-impacted-by-proof-of-citizenship-mandates/
Californiajackson
Yeah, people keep saying the poor, who wouldn't have passports, are typically Democrats. So they're telling me the bible thumping, gap toothed red-hatters in those idiot-on-the-street TV interviews are seasoned world travellers? I don't think so. (Apologies to non-red-hat-wearing people who happen to be gap-toothed.)

Some additional info:
Article makes distinction between non-profit and government-run libraries. State dept. says law requires passport offices be government offices (so non-gov (thus non-profit) must stop.) Also notes that different states set up local libraries differently - e.g. PA is 85% non-profit. (Gee, I wonder whether the state differences favor one party?)
NZSheeps
For Profit libraries are more like a subscription service - you never actually own the product
mothmam
There is no such thing as a for-profit library wtf
DoomeD2Walk
Can’t win if they don’t cheat
SpamYarBlockers
I wonder where the targeted libraries are located?
NickRivieraMD
Re your first sentence: Read your own article, man. It's non-profit as opposed to government-run. This is about 15% of public libraries nationwide, different in different states because some states structure their public library system as non-profit as opposed to governmental more heavily.
Dyamonde
1) make passport mandatory for voting 2)make it nearly impossible to get a passport 3) purge all democrat voters from the registration 4) win election
meowingintensifies
kind of ironic, since blue states have the highest percentage of passport holders. they're shooting themselves in the foot with this, tbh.

This librarian agrees.
PotatoPirateTheThird
probably gonna streisand effect it. i didn't know the library could help with a passport
GreenJayBird
libraries are amazing and provide a wide range of services and assistance for free
SpartaWolf117
if you have to pay for an ID to register to vote, that's a poll tax which is unconstitutional
buttcreambandit
It’s really the perfect way to get everyone identification for free. Cool. Make the ID thing a thing, but make the government provide a Real ID for free. Now it’s constitutionally legal. Everyone wins, it’s no big deal. But of course that’s not what this is actually about
buttcreambandit
It would benefit so many people in so many ways too
TripleDane
Conservatives never do anything for the reason they say " to keep election more accurate" is the excuse. it the "keep poor/black/woman/etc out" that was the underlying purpose.
you gotta be really dumb to vote conservative in the us
hotaru251
exactly why it will fail if taken to SCOTUS. Only way around this is makign a passport free....and even then its liekly gonna be ending up in scotus due to how long it can take to get one after you apply for one especially if every american now needs one the queue would be insane and too much to get done prior to next election time.
SalmonTheWise
Kavanaugh will write that it's all cool with him and to go along. Just like he legalized racial profiling.
capmodel
* should fail if it gets to SCOTUS. I assume the worst with this Robert’s court.
Madalchemist2018
Uncke Thomas's opinion for tge 6/3 majority. The original text of the constitution did not say that non-profit librarians could handle passport photographs so as an orginalist I must find the practice unconstitutional.
wadatahmydamie
I hope none of the pedo protectors on SCOTUS die free
Ac1dBurn72
Yeah. Donnie's gonna try to EO it anyways. And all the red states are gonna adopt it.
IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PASSPORT THIS IS THE TIME TO GET ONE IF YOU'RE ABLE.
hotaru251
EO's can't bypass the constitution. Constitution is THE law that overrides all other laws made. Its open to interpretation, but the part about the not paywalling voting is clear that even corrupt scotus cant spin it to be murky.
Ac1dBurn72
I will say I agree with you, I'm just worried that those in power won't enforce that.
It takes (roughly) $200 to get a passport. Excluding those living paycheck to paycheck.
Which is a voting tarrif/tax.
But how it's enforced is the issue.
TheAngriestBeardman
Unconstitutional to who, the party actively dismantling said constitution? Do you think they give a fuck?
nclu
Courts slapped down his attempt to do this by executive order in the Summer. They're blowing through laws left & right, but they have also lost a bazillion cases

You can use a state issued ID
FiftyShadesOfTiramisu
Leaving the SAVE act aside, an ID can cost up to $50 depending on the state and there may be additional traveling costs involved. The poorest of the poor can't afford that. Since it amounts to a poll tax it's also unconstitutional. And you have to produce an original birth certificate or a certified copy, which millions of US-born American citizens are unable to do. Some lost it in a house fire or while moving, or their late parents lost it, doesn't matter. Point being, these citizens are ...
FiftyShadesOfTiramisu
eligible to vote and any law that would prevent them from voting is a violation of their constitutional rights. You can't run the country like a third world banana republic that doesn't keep proper records of their citizens and mail them everything necessary to vote as soon as they turn 18, and then require a form of ID at the voting booth that was never issued to many citizens.
Autittuderp
With your birth certificate...if the names don't match, no vote. Meant to keep married women, adoptees, trans folks et al. from voting.
azazyel
IDK, looks like you need proof of citizenship https://bipartisanpolicy.org/article/five-things-to-know-about-the-save-act/
69Voltage
I stand corrected, ty. I don’t see this taking affect, tho.
azazyel
I don't really think it'll pass either but just that this is what's being pushed is alarming

On the other hand, a whole lot of other "That'll never happen" stuff is already happening. I would be 0% surprised if this eventually passes.
