Irony

It's Sunday, I don't have work tomorrow, I have a partial strawberry seltzer I'm sipping while coding a rpg maker game, and I'm introspective.

Houston had its ups and downs. I lived through several hurricanes. I got my bachelor's. I learned the school system was not only broken, but openly hostile. I learned how to study in college. I learned how to hate people. I learned that my detractors were wrong.

By my last post, you can probably guess I didn't find my dream job until after I left Houston. Up until that point, it was slaving away in increasingly bad retail positions. It was only after moving to the middle of nowhere I found an opportunity to make more money than I ever dared to dream.

I still miss some things about the city. It's a long drive to anywhere of significance where I am, 35 minutes minimum to the closest McDonalds or Kroger. I don't miss commuting to a job I hated, though, or the ever-encroaching despair; the feeling that I would turn 50 and still be stuck behind a counter.

On the subject of the pact that was the subject of the last post- i.e. The Bargain With God, "Give Me a Job and I'll tithe/give 10% to charities"- it has been suggested to me that I am using this as a means of rationalizing cause and effect; that low self-esteem is telling me that I can't possibly have earned something like this on my own merits, and so divine intervention was necessary.

I intend to continue anyway, because greed doesn't suit me, and bargains with God are not something I would like to fuck around and find out with in regards to breaking my end of the deal. Let those who bother to remember me regard it as one of my more benevolent quirks.

So far, no grim omens or near-miss lightning strikes. If He has heard me and He did agree, so far I can only guess I haven't pissed Him off in regards to the deal.

I guess I'm still riding the high of things going so much better than planned.

As a closing note, for the record I think the absurdly low wages seen in retail and service industry are still bullshit. That does not teach "struggling", "humility", or any virtue. It just teaches people to accept abuse and being undervalued as their lot in life, and it's time that nonsense ended.

Stay safe all.

Congrats on the job! And hey, whether or not He's up there, a promise to donate to charity is a good one to keep.

The good news is that I was fortunately in an area where the last major hurricane- Harvey- only mildly inconvenienced us, so no real pics...

The bad news is when I had an opportunity to go out, it was just depressing. In some areas? Business as usual. Others? End of the world.

That's tough, especially when feeling on the ropes. I see happy folk in restaurants and feel quite disassociated.
