It's the same logic that makes people think Y2K was no big deal. When you successfully prevent something, people start to think that there was no threat to begin with and that the precautions taken were unnecessary and stupid. In the case of vaccines it's even worse because it's gone from "were these diseases really that bad?" to "what if it's actually the vaccines that are secretly killing us?".

I had chicken pox as a kid, and I remember being pretty miserable, the worst was the itching. (Well for me as an autistic, anything happening with my skin drives me especially crazy) my mother taped socks over my hands in an effort to stop me from picking. This would have been around 90-91. I also had some gnarly fever dreams, and that’s when the Alice in wonderland thing started for me. (That’s where as I’m falling asleep things seem to get really big or very small around me)

The biggest "issue" with vaccines is that you live longer. A longer lifespan makes you prone to other diseases and then idiots try to correlate those things. "More people get XYZ that have gotten vaccines" "yes because that's because they lived long enough to have not died from something were already able to prevent"

when i was a kid parents would get there kids together for chicken pox baths. if one kid had it , they wanted as many kids to get it early. that way the immune system could fight it off fast and leave as few scars as possible. most would stretch out apron growing. Its was the most painful thing. the ones that had not popped like massive zits where super itchy. the ones that had ruptured burned. 1995 was the year the vax became wide spread 8 years after i had it. Pox has been 97% gone sinse then

I had it but it wasn't even notable. Really minor. I've read since that this was an awful idea to actually do. I've never had shingles but my brother did, iirc, and it was terrible.

I got chicken pox in the early 90's, only one in my family wifi had already had it was my mom so both my dad and my sister got it as well. I don't even remember how bad mine was, because my dad ended up with it in his lungs and was in the hospital for a while and almost died. I almost killed my dad bringing home chicken pox, that's the only part that really stuck with me.
I still keep up to date on all my vaccines.

Daycare I went to as a kid in the early 90s took it upon themselves to expose all of the kids in the daycare when one kid came down with it. My mother was furious at the time because they took that decision away from her. I had a pretty mild case, but my father never had it as a kid so we had to keep him away from me during the whole time I was contagious. Glad I had it when I did, though.

(shit my typing is bad, today)...'t have a vaccine. My, and my sibling's experience with chickenpox was not so severe as the ones described in comments. We did not get broken pustules or scars. I didn't scratch (much) and treated the bumps with various itch suppressants. I would be surprised if benedryl or some hormones didn't do a much better job than witch hazel, baking soda, calamine lotion, etc.

Yes. It went into the vaccine schedule for kids in the mid 90s. I was having a discussion with an older coworker about chicken pox when a younger coworker mentioned they didn't know what we were talking about and didn't know anyone their age that had had it. This led to us old guys doing research and discovering the updated vaccine schedule.

Yeah, chickenpox will fuck you up as an adult, but for kids it's relatively mild; that was the whole idea behind pox parties. Note that this is NOT the case for measles, and also that we DO have "pox party simulation in a syringe" now for both of them, so real disease parties are entirely pointless now.
(I also got it as a kid; it wasn't terrible but I remember it sucked ass. Wish the vaccine were a thing.)

Can confirm -- our neighbor's oldest daughter got it and we had a play date so my brother and I could get it. This was in either 94 or '95. I remember it sucked but wasn't too bad (thankfully we were otherwise healthy and managed to recover well). I got shingles in HS and that sucked. Definitely wish I could have been vaxxed for that.

Yep, sophomore year me didn't even know what shingles was. Thankfully, my parents learned what it looked like from me so when my dad got it (during COVID teledoc times) my mom immediately knew what it was and told the virtual doc and got him on meds WAY faster than if it was a normal "weird rash I don't want to go to the doctor, let's hope it goes away" vibes. Now they're both vaccinated for it.

Mine was '89 I think. Two kids from my foster mom's church. Only time I ever played at their house. Got over it quick. Was really excited to find out there was a vaccine when I had kids myself, quick and scar free or not, that itching for days sucked, and I was one of the lucky ones.

We actually still do this, not due to vaccine deny. Chicken pox are rarely dangerous unless you are pregnant, or low immune-system etc. Afaik the vaccines are not lifelong (at least not medical certified to be live long, unless progress has happened in the last few years) and getting chicken pox as an adult sucks.

i'm in a holding state to get a pneumonia vaccine. had a knee replacement surgery and picked up a pneumonia now i have to wait for a certain time so there is no trace before i can get the vaccine (had one years ago before some chemo but they do wear off after some years.)

I got chickenpox as a kid in the 1960s. Now I have shingles that started the day after I started chemotherapy when my immune system dropped. It’s been over a year and the pain, burning, stinging, itching, scabbing and numbness (forehead, eyebrow, eyelid, scalp, skull) won’t go away. I’ve been taking Valtrex daily.
