Yanga - 3 days old

Here you can see Yanga as she is 3 days old. She was born on Sunday 29th of October in the Zoo of Hannover, Germany. Her mother showed no interest in her and after some time of intense observation of her and the family of gorillas, the team decided that she had to be taken out of the group. Taking a baby out of her 'natural' habitat and family is always a last resort since the keepers don't want to risk a wrong kind of imprinting of the baby.

10 days old now...still laughing

The keepers have to carry her around 24/7 since Gorilla babies need permanent contact to and warmth from their "parents". Since she hasn't been fed by her mother, her immune system isn't as developed as it should be. A substitute milk is used to help her gain weight.
The keepers take her to her family on a daily basis so she gets to know the other gorillas and knows where she truly belongs.

2660 gr (93.83 oz) with blanket, her eyes glued to the keeper. Isn't she a cutie?

Her mother, Zazie, was never very motherly. That's why Zazie got a contraceptive but as it is sometimes the case, the pills weren't 100% effective. Now the Zoo Hannover is looking for a gorilla nurse within the EEP (European Endangered Species Programme).

There are only 95.000 Western Flatland Gorillas (sci. name: Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in the wild. The Zoo Hannover has been participating in the EEP for years now to ensure the survival of this wonderful species.

I have taken these pictures from the following page (German):
