I haven't heard of a kayaker being hurt by a shark, a few swimmers/surfers get munched on every year. Swimmers have nothing, surfboards are flimsy kayaks are sturdy.

Scary but more curious than aggressive. Had it seen him as prey, there wouldn't be a whole lot he could have done about it in a kayak. Did the right thing by calmly leaving the area.
I wouldn't say calmly. In his panic he was splashing that paddle in just the right way to keep the shark interested, often only clipping the surface of the water and looking like a struggling animal. Slower deeper paddling would have been better there. Luckily that was the only thing he did wrong, and as he got closer to shore the shark probably lost interest.
Not smack talking mind you. It's a lot easier to say what someone should have done rather than do it yourself in the moment!
I live in on the coast where great whites are very active. You will not see me on a kayak or paddle board. The surfers here are crazy. Theyre like oh yeah saw one the other day. Theyre fine. The fuck they are.

Same here. Few years ago a woman who decided to swim with seals in the surf got chomped by a great white. Don’t hang around or act like prey.
