You can make good sized rock salt in your kitchen in a week or three. Insects can strip a bone of its meat, like this skull, in a couple of days to a week.
So this skull may only have been there less than a month.

How do you make rock salt?

You take a glass of water, supersaturate the water with salt, and suspend a string from a pencil into the water and let it stand for a week or two. The salt will recrystallize on the string in large hunks the longer it stays.
