They're just not.
1) while they can cause damage, they are broken down eventually, so lifetime illness is much less likely and chronic illness that appears decades down the line is unlikely.
2) they can be engineers to minimise penetrative nature
3) exposure can be tightly controlled and isn't incidental through occupation.

I could have sworn there wan an article that said a cable made from nanotubes cut a car in half, but when it was discovered, broken tubes were said to have been worse, but I cant find any mention of the wire, car or tubes so I must have misheard ir.
