#28 Who are these rich fuckers with more than one suit? Or shoes in multiple colours?

Europeans have this joke about Americans being monolingual, but the real joke is that they're the ones that are monolingual when it comes to units. Americans grow up using multiple unit systems and develop a natural fluency with the idea of units of measure, that people from metric-only countries just don't learn to the same intuitive level.

#29 Except... this ignores one thing. The poor schlubs who stocks the shelves. I was that person, minimum waged and discovering, to my dismay, that other people groceries are extremely heavy. One of the few enjoyable (at least by contrast) tasks was rounding up carts from the parking lot. Natural light, something different, and unlike cans, carts have wheels. Altogether easier. So when I see abandoned carts now, my inner stock bot smiles.

#24 I quit university after one year because the field I went for, "Languages, Litterature and Media", mostly had local authors in our tiny language on the curriculum. The only outside text I remember was an unknown poem about a giant bird that was NOT Rok.

#29 100%, although I'd argue that the definition of a "dire emergency" may depend on the person and their specific situation. If you have two screaming children in the car for instance, you may be forgiven to deal with them in that moment rather than adhering to this particular societal norm.

Tesla had a Slavic last name, although he was Italian. The word "tesla" means "adze" in English, which is a kind of swinging woodworking tool, like an ax with the blade turned 90 degrees.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Tesla was born in Croatia, to Serbian parents. I don't know much about Europe; does that make him Italian?

#14 my brother knew a guy who took acid for a final exam- he was convinced he’d written the best essay of his life- trouble was, he’d written like 10 pages and started back at the top of the same page each time.

#29 its a good litmus test for finding which people, barring disabilities, are lazy dickheads. The same can be said for litterers. There are garbage cans everywhere, yet that's too much of a chore. Special shout-out to cigarette smokers

I think the amount of carts in lots really shows how we shouldn't have been surprised at the selfishness of others during covid. Not saying ppl aren't good, or that I don't think the majority of society is caring of others. But, we should be aware that a good 10-20% (obviously I made up those numbers) just don't have the same skills, empathy, or courtesy, whatever it may be. They shouldn't be let off the hook, but we don't have to be so surprised/upset when we see it.

What about single women in dark parking lots? Someone that has kids in their car? As someone that used to collect shipping carts, it was a nice reprieve from customers to wander the lot.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

Those would be exceptions to the rule. It's not a perfect test, as there are still other factors to account for.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, but it is good you start with an open heart and not a blaming attitude.

BINGO!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Aren’t people allowed an opportunity to be harmlessly disobedient once in a while?? I’d never litter but come on. Let people say “fuck it” once in a while with the carts.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

It's definitely not ppl just doing it once in a while. There're absolutely ppl that never put back a cart. But loose carts take up spaces (which can lead to road rage, or can be dangerous for those with poor fitness, kids, or single women or minorities who now have to walk father alone) or can roll away and hit cars or actual people. You don't actually know if leaving a cart will cause harm, but you do know putting it away won't.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In Australia the cart return is contracted out to specialised companies that do it at some places...shopping centres, etc. my friend owns one of these companies and says never to return the cart so he keeps his contracts.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The argument is that their disobedience is causing others harm in that it can make it harder to park. Pretty small harm in the grand scheme

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I would argue that making it harder to park is still harmless if it even does that.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Disobedience against authority is fine. Disobedience that doesn’t hurt those in power and only hurts people who are in your same situation or maybe worse off is not cool.

Is someone hurt, really?
