Muon Magnetic Moment Confirmed

This is the storage-ring magnet of the muon g − 2 experiment at Fermilab. The g factor describes the gyration of a muon in an external magnetic field. It is slightly larger than 2. In a new high-precision calculation, physicists have confirmed the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (aμ).

In this standard model of elementary particles, the negatively charged muon is in the green section. It is a fermion, a particle with a half-integer spin. A muon has 207 times the mass of an electron. It has a very short mean lifetime of 2.2 millionths of a second.

LO-HVP is the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization. The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is 715.1 times 10 to the minus 10. This diagram shows the light contribution of up and down quarks to the intermediate-distance (ID) window. The values confirm the predictions of the standard model.

This Feynman diagram shows the muon's most common decay mode. It decays to an electron, an electron antineutrino, and a muon neutrino. The W- boson is an intermediate virtual particle.

Muonic helium (He) is an example of an exotic atom. One electron was replaced by a muon. Due to its greater mass, its orbit is much closer to the nucleus than that of the electron. Muons can catalyze nuclear fusion reactions.

This image shows a muon passing through lead in a cloud chamber. The massive muons emit less deceleration radiation, called Bremsstrahlung. They can penetrate deeper into matter than electrons. Every second, the human body is hit by about 50 muons created by cosmic rays.

Please just find some kind of link between gravity and electromagnetism! We need hover boards and real flying cars already! This is neat, I guess 🙄

These are great posts. They would be even better with separators to keep the transcripts aligned with the slides.

The phrase "we're just the universe trying to understand itself" is actually wild when you think about it.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So how long did you think about it?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This much.

Muons can catalyze nuclear fusion reactions.
Every second, the human body is hit by about 50 muons created by cosmic rays.
Why is no one doing anything about the danger to us all of becoming spontaneous fusion reactors?

5 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

probably because people have no idea how radiation works and think nuclear reactors emit radioactivity in quantities in any way comparative to the amount of radiation they absorb daily

Whenever a new big accelerator is built (RHIC, LHC), there is a question about whether it will produce some Earth-destroying new state of matter like stable strangelets or micro black holes or Vonnegut's ice-nine. The answer is to compute how long it would have taken such processes to destroy the Moon thanks to hard cosmic rays, and observe that the Moon is still made of ordinary matter. Muon-catalyzed fusion is hard.
