Pretty sure you only read the 300 page Tolkien version, not Jackson & Walsh's 10,000 page fanfiction version.

It's, overall, a 9 hour movie, based on a 300 page novel. The stuff they added that was canon was OK, but half of it is just garbage.

I enjoyed getting to see Gandalf's side trip to the tombs of Angmar even though that was made up.
