You say this as if it's something new. For decades, Microsoft's business model is to release a product before it's ready, and let the rest of the world act as beta testers. They spend the first year or more releasing patches until finally it works reasonably well. The only difference is, now they're doing it with AI.
And something to keep in mind is that's going to affect where effort is directed, similar with sponsors for projects like KDE. Just as consumers don't pay for windows so like most corporations MS follows the money, consumers aren't putting up incentives for linux related projects to improve, it's a happy byproduct the whole ecology works out as well as it does.
If only there was a way a way MS could track patch performance for a certain time period. Na, let's just overly complicate simple programs like notepad and MS Paint so they're unusable.

Even for xp, they probably didn't want to do a major sp2 but felt they had to because not doing it was worse, and allocating engineers to that likely played into other factors like the cancelling of the troubled Longhorn project that seemd to overhaul windows and restart with a less impressive vista. Failing to execute that overhaul about 20 years ago probably meant windows will never do much more than stagnate, most would be happy with maintained win2k/xp

I have nothing against Linux itself, and have my own favorite flavor, but people like you don’t understand the average consumer mindset that has kept Windows the mainstream even though 8, Vista, Me, and 95. At work we sell products driven by computer cabinets with many baremetal machines. We are running Windows on each computer and vm. Long story short, directors were convinced we had to stay with MS for stability and such. With Windows 11 arrival it's now pretty clear to everybody that we need to move to Linux, and we are. Consumers won't ditch windows but companies already are. Add Broadcom buying vmware and fucking it up, and you have a perfect recipe for Linux to get more popular.

I use it for digital art, writing, and gaming, though; I'm not a programmer or some such. I know Linux is better, but it does not support the art programs I use and I'm not a fan of the alternatives that do work on it. It's not that I don't want to have to think, it's that my most beloved hobbies are tied to my little rig.
Android Linux already rules mobile & I'm replacing my windows 10 laptop with SteamOs Linux, will dock a handheld for desktop use.
SteamOS uses an Android style sealed rootfs + ota updates, making it no harder to manage than a smartphone. The barrier to entry is gone, windows is over.

Yes, in fact I've gotten a few security updates on my Win10 Pro machines after it were supposedly "no longer supported" a few months ago. So I'm suspicious that it was just another grift to scare people to upgrade to something they didn't need.

I have a dual boot setup on all my computers since 15 years, running Windows 7/10/11 and Ubuntu on the setups. I have used Ubuntu 10.04+ as my daily driver. I use Windows only for printing hi-quality photos and some very specific tools.
Much thanks to GloriousEggroll for the Proton-GE updates that let me play even more games too. Still kills me that basically the rest of the Wine team took contract work with Valve to make Steam's Proton but Eggroll is still trucking along basically alone and still keeping ahead of them while maintaining the Nobara Linux distro. The man is insane.
If you are strictly browsing and office tasks Linux Mint is a nice startpoint. If you are gaming mainly Bazzite or SteamOS. If you want to stream/game/edit/design Nobara. Ubuntu is powerful but comes very barebones so its not very approachable for most. The benefit of things like Bazzite and Nobara (both Fedora Linux based) is most of what you need comes preinstalled.
I'm transitioning. I have Pop!_OS and Fedora on my laptops but my desktop is still Windows 11. Love the Linux life. One downside is one of my laptops is a Surfacebook 2, and apparently the hardware is hella specific and I have some compatibility issues. No issues on my other one, though.
I can even run some of my fav Windows software on it. I like to do graphic design and digital art, and I got the Affinity suite running smooth on them through Lutris.
Yeah, I'm a gamer first a foremost, but i have been leaning into my PS5 more and more in recent years. I think i may be able to jump to Linux at some point and kiss Windows PC gaming goodbye.
The real crunch for win10 comes when ESU (not LTSC) ends and then frameworks like chromium drop support, and downstream applications that use it drop support, then you're well into "your mileage may vary" territory. I'm still on 10, but you've got to consider escape routes, for me linux is just a reboot away.
