Technically plausible. I remember reading a bit of History where there was a Japanese Envoy that went to visit the Pope back in 1600 something. But they went thru the Pacific route. So they stopped in Mexico first ( which was a Spanish colony at the time ) . The trip took years . And when they came back , the Gov. had changed and decided they did not want anything to do with " christians ". Which sucked for them on account they had converted to Catholicism on their way there.
