Making Memories

Jun 6, 2024 9:42 AM

This is the result of a few minutes Hotair desoldering and hotplate soldering. Those rams are made forming purpose: Old GVP Cards (90s) were equipped with 68Pin Single Inline Memory Modules (SIMM). Since a card I repaired lacked those I had to build some.

The base are those PCB I ordered and RAM Chips I desoldered from 72Pin SIMMs

Right after soldering

One Module (4MB) for testing

And works!

Without RAM the accelerator part of the card was almost slower than before. The CPU can access the ram omits own path circumventing the rest of the hardware.

You made your own GVP SIMMS? Man, back in the late 80s / early 90s, that would have been big news! As it is, it's amazing for people who still have those cards to know that's even an option. Impressive! (My own 1230+ is already populated, though.)

And you even can remember the time you soldered memory chips when you look at the brown spot on your table. :P

I have of these two, just next to my keyboard.

Nah, that one was from a particular stubborn repair when I lost temper and wanted to liquify components rather than solder..

Nice! Currently rebuilding by first Amiga ever, a 1200... not sure which accelerator to use yet, but probably a TF1230 or TF1232.

Might want to stick with either Tsunami 030 (if available) or an ACA Board. Or (if you happen to have too much money) a blizzard 1230/40/60. The Terrible Fire Boards run but they have issues when running demos. The PiStorm32 lite offers insane (!) Speed and can play Diablo and emulate Pentium Speed from within the Workbench. There is an upcoming internal scandoubler for the PiStorm called Framethrower.. can’t wait to build one!
