There's a 6" globe inside for everything to hang from.
Some quick SketchUp work to make a model.
I had to design a gland to clamp onto the wire to hold the light in the centre of the cube.
Some little ribs on the inside to clamp the cable. A buddy hen 3D printed it for me.
My girlfriend spent a lot of time picking cubes and giving each side a coherent theme.
The sides are Chocolate (A1 - A5), Endgrain, Fire, and Bogwitch
Steel rods and acrylic tubing to hold the blocks in place.
Of course, how do I keep track of position and orientation when these all need to get sanded and painted?

Lots of multi-coloured sawdust from drilling all the holes
So much varathane to apply. This was the biggest time sink for this project.
But a sprayer let me get very smooth coats.
So many pretty colours. And the varathane should keep them true.
Assembly.
A bit of welding was involved. Lesson learned: powerful magnets will mess with your MIG arc.
I had to redo this three times and take it out of the magnets to get a good weld. Not my best work.
Almost done.
Remember everyone: Safety 3rd! I added a stainless steel cable just in case the electrical one fails. You can also see the 3D printed part.

While i love the creativity, functionality wise this seems a bit counterproductive. Dont the cubes obfuscate the light ?

Think of it more as mood lighting. It illuminates the table underneath nicely. And I've got enough potlights in the ceiling the ceiling to light up the room normally.

Very common for holding the steel in place for welding, especially the initial tacking welds. I guess there was just too much magentic flux when the magnets were arranged this way. My arc wouldn't "stick".
