October of 2018 my dad was diagnosed with skin cancer that had spread all through his body including into his brain. Doctor said that a few years earlier he wouldn't have made it to Christmas, but still only gave him 6 months to two years with treatment. It was one of the first events in what was probably the worst nine months of my life where so little went right and every other week was a different tragedy or emergency.
Things seemed grim at first for my dad and he wasn't himself in any way and was close to giving up, but then the docs changed some of his treatments and things got better for him. For my wife and I, we were able to adopt our little guy and while he was one of the best things to ever happen to us, we were worried he'd never have any memories of his Pops.
Last night, as we sat down to dinner, my dad told his the news! Talk about a reason to be Thankful this year!
Fuck cancer! It has been the reason I have lost so many family members on both sides. But it didn't get my dad and I the world is a better place today.

We say my dad died 3 years ago and every day since has been a gift for us. He's a changed person and we are all happy to have him.

I am so glad your story has turned so much for the better. Fuck cancer. For me the nightmare year was from mid 2018 to mid 2019. My best friend found out he had cancer and passed away 10 months later my grandpa had a stroke and passed away 9 months later. Their passing were 6 days apart. My mother found out she has cancer but she managed to beat it and has been over 4.5 years in the clear. After all that Covid time felt pretty happy time for healing. Hug your dad and tell him you love him.

Meanwhile, my best friend’s father hid his diagnosis for at least two years. Went into hospital on Tuesday and passed away in less than 12 hours. Thankfully my friend got some time with him before he passed. Fuck Cancer indeed (he was also my surrogate father when my own decided to side step his responsibilities).

My boss, and close friend was recently given the first half of this news. Things are looking positive. I hope he kicks it's ass.

My brother is going through brain surgery this week (Technology is super wild these days) and has had a similar overall diagnosis for the last year or so. I know we may never get there ourselves, but I'm glad sometimes cancer loses the battle.

About 3 years ago the docs said my younger brother had a 50/50 chance of surviving the next 3 months. He's still here, and doing remarkably well… with the same prognosis. Just visited him last week.

Had a friend that had to have a mastectomy a couple of years back. She's doing well and healthy. It is hard but you'll make it.

I'm happy for you. Sadly I had the opposite experience with my dad this year. Leukemia. It was responding to treatment and everything looked good for six months. But then suddenly this summer it pushed through and extremely rapidly in only couple weeks it was all over. Still I'm thankful for being able to go visit him and see him before the end, even if it was only for the last few days.

I am beyond delighted that the advances in medical care continue! Dad fought hard. He was a smoker- cigarettes kill, kids! And it took 3 different cancers to bring him down at age 83, so I was lucky, and so was he. Relatively lucky. A cure would have been so wonderful!

Yeah my dad wasn't a smoker, but my grandpa, both grandmas, and one of my uncles all died due to smoking related cancer. Uncle killed himself because he just didn't want to go through the fight.

I don't know what treatments they did but they did multiple ones and yes itnhad spread to the brain and many internal organs. Think the scene in Deadpool where he lists all the places his cancer had spread.
