A lot of people have been busy exploring the world of Fallout 4, working their way through the main quest or building up impressive settlements. However, I recommend setting a little time aside to try out one of the games you can play on your Pip-Boy:

Grognak and the Ruby Ruins!

You can find the holotape for this game in the basement of the Memory Den in Goodneighbor. It's a mini classic turn-based RPG, and it's really fun. Simple gameplay systems and short, only takes an hour or two, but nostalgic and worth playing through.

You can choose to take two companions along with Grognak, out of a choice of four, each with their own special ability. Much of the game is fighting through enemy strongholds to earn permanent stat boosts to give out to your party members, while gradually pursuing your quest of reaching the Ruby Ruins to kill your nemesis, Grelok.

If you'd like a quick tip - Grognak is your best damage dealer, and I strongly recommend giving him all of the damage buffs, which really add up in the late game!

But the main reason I'm posting about this isn't to praise the game...it's to talk about this weird cryptogram you encounter later in the quest.

See, you can't reach the Ruby Ruins easily, a strange force pushes you back and turns you around when you get near them. You need to retrieve several artifacts and take them to a wizard, who will cast a spell that reveals a ghost in the area who's been preventing passage. When the wizard casts this spell, he says this:

GHISS IF NOJHS, JHISS IF KRUAUK, O CIMMAUNK SHUU SI SHIW WIERSULF SI SHU LOZONJ WIRLK, SI LU AUNCHIRUK SI SHU LOJHS ON SPHOROS AUNK ON FRUSK.

This is recognizable as a cryptogram, a letter-replacement puzzle where you need to figure out which letter is a stand in for another to spell out the real sentence. For example,

GXO TIAPD SZUQW YUH NICLK UFOZ GXO BEVJ RUM
THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG

Grognak doesn't give you any starting clues, as far as I could tell. However, sometimes you can make a few assumptions about these puzzles based on which letters are used and where. Sometimes all the vowels remain vowels, just different ones. And sure enough, there's an "O" by itself, which has to be "I" or "A." There are also multiple instances of "SHU," which as two consonants followed by a vowel, is most likely "THE." There's also a "SHUU" which would then become "THEE," which isn't unlikely to see in a medieval game setting.

However, this leads to an odd situation...the H in "SHU" is already an H. Could it be that some letters don't need to be replaced, and are already correct?

Also, if S = T, then we have a few words near the start of the sentence that end in "TT," which is really strange.

I've already filled in O = I above, and taking a look at some of the shorter words, it's likely that "SI" is "TO" and "LU" is "BE." The phrasing makes sense, "I thee to..." and later phrases like "to the" and "to be." And if we go with the earlier conclusion that some letters are already correct and don't need to be changed, "IF" looks like it's probably "OF," and "ON" is probably "IN."

There are also a few words ending in "_HT," which is most likely going to be "GHT," in words like night and light, and in fact some of the substitutions made above result in "NIGHT." It also gives us an "ING," which is promising.

There's still some bizarre stuff going on that really doesn't make sense. What kind of words are "GHOTT" and "BIGHT?" But other parts of the sentence appear to make perfect sense...

But look at the second line. "I THEE TO TO THE " You can almost read that as english as it is. It's very close to "I COMMAND THEE TO SHOW YOURSELF TO THE..." What if we just throw most of those letters in there and see what happens?

Wow, that practically solves it. Sort of. It looks like "AU" together simply equals "A" by itself, and similarly "PH" is just "P." It also appears that sometimes letters have been used both as themselves and as letters to be replaced. So "GHISS" is "GHOST," with the first S already in place and the second replaced by T, and "JHISS" is also "GHOST," but with J replaced by G. The last word is tricky, but I think I can figure it out...the full sentence is likely:

GHOST OF NIGHT, GHOST OF DREAD, I COMMAND THEE TO SHOW YOURSELF TO THE LIVING WORLD, TO BE ANCHORED TO THE LIGHT IN SPIRIT AND IN FLESH.

Which totally fits in context of the spell the wizard is casting at the time.

Well, I was hoping it'd be something a bit more silly like a message from the developers, but still fun to work through! I hope you enjoyed this look at a puzzle-within-a-game-within-a-game.

The site I used to work through the cryptogram was http://scottbryce.com/cryptograms/

Was I the only one who was disappointed you couldn't get bonus perks by doing well in the holotape games?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I goddamn love cryptography in game / shows. Gravity Falls is a gold mine for this

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Gee, it'd have been great if Bethesda put this kinda effort into making the main game an actual RPG.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You put a lot of time into this. +1 just for effort alone.

10 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

Yo dawg, I heard you liked having a video game in your video game.

10 years ago | Likes 438 Dislikes 2

So we have you a cryptogram in the videogame inside your videogame

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TIL Xzibit runs Bethesda

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There is a mod with which you can "play" doom on your pipboy...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd like to see a list of all games that do that. I know Donkey Kong 64 does it too, but that's all I can remember.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Theres nothing like building your house, furnishing it, setting up electricity, building a terminal, and playing some Grognak.

10 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 0

So I put checkers inside of Pokemon inside of Fallout 4 for you.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

So I put video games in your video game so you can video game while you video game

Thanks Nick

because it doesn't take a ridiculous amount of hours to play FO4 - I need to spend hours playing a game in my game just to make it longer...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have played for 60 hours and seen everything there is to see.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

In short they put an Elder Scrolls game in Fallout

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You have never played an Elder Scrolls game.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah... (._.)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Come over and play then.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I only said that to say Bethesda put a Bethesda game in a Bethesda game, so y'know...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Props for you figuring that out...I most definitely would not have figured that out lol

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This game, fallout 4, lived up to the hype this fucking game has everything you could want from a post-apocalyptic RPG. Get it

10 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 20

Just a tip, if you're not a huge fan of the dead landscape you can easily mod it with nexus mods to add green trees and grass etc.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

calm down bethseda

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It lived up to the hype well enough, but it doesnt feel like a Fallout game. It's fucking amazing and the hype didnt lie, but not RPG enough

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I disagree. It's a fantastic shooter game, but a garbage Fallout game.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fallout 4 is probably the most hyped game - ever - that wasn't overhyped, in my opinion

10 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 7

The random events by going just about anywhere and the background dialog kept me in the game.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It was my first time playing a Fallout and it felt...monotonous. Almost every quest consisted of "Go here, kill/retrive this" but 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

It beat flicking my balls extremely hard to the tune of "just friends" by musiq soul child 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

fallout 4 wasn't overhyped? o im laffin

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Should have had hardcore mode from New Vegas.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

They should have kept a lot of things from New Vegas, honestly. They'll probably all get modded in later though, so eh.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's hardcore mode in this context? Is it like a permadeath thing? Cuz that sounds right up my alley.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not permadeath but in HCNV EVERYTHING had weight, you had to eat and drink and sleep to survive, doctor bags were only way to fix limbs

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

basically just more RPG elements that made the game better imo. Permadeath would have also been interesting in that mix.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Except for most of the features in an RPG. It's still fun, just not the fallout games I used to love.

10 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 6

How come it's not the same?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

By fallout games do you mean 3 and new vegas? Because it's better then both in every way. Or 1 and 2 because they are completely 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

2/2 different games made by different people. Play wasteland 2 if that's what you're after.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Yeah, it's a fun shooter. Perk system does not an RPG make.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Shooter lmao. What a ridiculous over simplification. I'll never understand peoples need for rpgs to be tied to archaic systems of leveling.

So they force you to do the main quest? Huh that's news to me. You also can't kill who ever you want and feast on corpses as a cannibal?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I have no problem with the perk system, my issue is that your characters stats and build doesn't matter outside of combat. 1/

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

If your character has low int, it should stunt your character in dialogue ala 1,2,NV. But with fallout 4 it doesn't matter at all, 2/

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

However, if i am completely wrong please tell, I'm not all that far into the game.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're completely wrong about it just being a shooter. That'd be like calling GTA a racing game. It's a ridiculous over simplification. 1/?
