After deciding last year to get a vasectomy so my girlfriend and I never get a bad surprise (as neither of us wants kids, we of course chatted about it at length) - and months and months of waiting, one cancellation from the clinic and more months of anxious waiting - it's finally DONE !
To all people out there who want one but hesitate, I understand the anxiety, but it was actually quick and easy. Went to the clinic, chat with the personnel (and they were absolutely great, patient and courteous), anesthesia, then woke up an hour later a bit woozy feeling but it cleared up gently.
I have one stitch, a bit of soreness, and bunched up pelvic floor muscles, but honestly ? No real pain. Slept like a log last night, and I was able to go for a groceries run on foot today, about one hour of leisurely walk, and I'm okay.
I understand some folks had it less easy and I'm sorry they got it rough. But - right now, my experience is super positive. I had prepared ice packs, frozen peas, painkillers, cushions... But so far I felt the need for none of these.
I am so fucking glad and proud to have been able to do this to keep my girlfriend safe. It took a damned lot of patience and I was anxious as hell beforehand, but right now ? I feel like a million bucks.
Lads, guys, all penis-toting gentlebeings out there - if you're confident you don't want kids, make yourself safe if you can. For them, and also for your own wellbeing.
Edith : Most Viral, thank you all, mates ! Thank you also for the congratulations and sharing your own experiences. You're being a great, supportive bunch.
2nd Edit : I do not know who edited my post without my consent to add a fourth tag giving an approximation of my age. I did not do that, nor did I consent to my propos being altered that way. WTF, mods ?
DrinkMoreMrBrown
I did this last year. Newly single from a 20 year marriage, one amazing daughter, and then the Dobbs decision came down on a Friday. The following Monday, I made an appointment and had it done. That is one thing I don't need to stress about as I'm dating in my 40s. No regrets, and it was quick and easy.
MartynMage
@OP Apologies, the #39 tag is actually an issue we're currently working to resolve that is caused by adding apostrophes to post descriptions

Compression shorts will make your recovery much less painful
hollerfloozy
YAY no more baby juice. Stay safe and make sure to follow your doctors orders regarding activities and such.
TalkingSnake
Congratulations to you and your former toaster strudel.
bkcantthinkofanythingclever
I had it done when I was almost 50, barely had any pain. Quick and easy
krennnkalis
Highly recommend it for those who do not want any surprises. Being honest, mine was a bit rougher. Definitely needed the meds and was on light duty for almost a week. But after having a clear specimen test a few months later I was hecking Thankful.
MajorNikon
Vasectomy means never having to say you're sorry
Yeastieh
Got one a couple weeks ago. They gave me a Xanax and a local. I was awake for the entire thing. The only painful part was my anatomy was a little wonky. Spent the weekend watching Marvel movies with my son and a bag of peas on my junk. Also gotta make sure to wear a Jock Strap. Even if you are feeling fine continue to wear it!

I was told tight, supporting underpants were good enough, just keep the area clean and disinfected twice daily. I'm doing that, not playing with it, and the antibiotic cream comes tomorrow to ensure perfect recovery.
CrunchWrapFrappuccinoo
I'm going in for a pre op next week. It can't happen fast enough for me.

Congrats to you ! Ask all your questions to the surgeon, they're not only used to it, they actualky want to make sure you're up to date. No stupid or bashful questions, either ;) I can already tell you erectile function is not harmed xD
TheOriginalAmberRose
It was the best thing my husband and I ever did. Sex without consequences is awesome!

Happy fun :)
skipweasel
My wife kindly drove me home after mine. Less thoughtfully, she decided to get home quickly, over every bump in town.
CallThisAUsername
I took the tram home, safer and smoother xD

Ouch
skipweasel
She has apologised. Oooh, two or three hundred times, over the last twenty years - every time I bring it up, actually.
Gangawifey
Oh duuuude...... You bring it up just to watch her squirm, doncha? Evil little bugger..... My husband would do the same were we in your shoes, lol
DocRock61
About 46 years ago and no regrets!
Volpe42
Never isn't entirely accurate. There's a failure rate even for sterilization.
pdarkfred
Just a matter of time for this penis-toting gentlebeing, congrats on your snipping!

Thanks, hope yours go smoothly too ;)

Cheers!

I'm waiting on RISUG/Vasel still. They need to hurry it the fuck up.
Erythrotrichophile
I’m in the same boat in a sense. I went when I was 23 and the doc told me, no. Im 39 now and I’m preparing to schedule a consult for another one. Glad to hear a positive experience right before I potentially have the same.

My dude, frankly, so far, it's so painless, I'm shocked. Feels a bit tense muscularly, but no more than after a heavy legs workout. I'll still follow all the guidelines and precautions of course, but - the relief is great.
davidthemonkey
i have been trying since i was 18 (always knew i didnt want kids) and finally at 31 and a different doctors (moved house) im getting it done in august! :D

Happy for you, my mate. Freedom !

I wanted get snipped, but my wife just said "are we sure we're done having kids?"
CallThisAUsername
If you wanted to be snipped, sounds like you should sit down and have that convo, aye ;)
iputthefiresout
We have/are. Nothing has been decided. We're not having more kids unless we both agree.
mypostsecrets
Got mine done years ago. So simple and effective! Better than the pill women take, no fucking with hormones, no forgetting, no monthly bill.
AskThisGuy
Wait till you get the all clear from the Dr. And follow the rest guidelines.
CallThisAUsername
I will ;)
DarshDarker
I got really high after mine and chilled the rest of the night. It was an hour or 2 of discomfort total. My neighbor kept trying to tell me it was "unmanly". He said, "what's a snake without its venom?" Semen/venom comparison aside, I said, "any one of the hundreds of non-venomous varieties of snake that exist." He's an idiot... In love and in snake knowledge.
CallThisAUsername
Looks like your neighbour could learn to mind his own fucking business. Glad you got so little discomfort !

I did not get a cake. I'm filing complaints with my wife
PacoTheMeatManager
I had it done after kid #4. Didn't miss any work and I'm a mechanic. 2 years later I had it reversed. 5 kids now
GlobeHoppinBunnyBooper
Woohoo! Congrats! Husband did this, too, and he is quite happy with the results (AKA no birth control for me and no condoms for him. Win-win, plus Double Income No Kids. We moved to the beach with our animals and are enjoying it!)
CallThisAUsername
That's kind of our plan on the long term, too xD
VagisilToothpaste
As a woman who hates children, and condoms, but loves sex - I REALLY REALLY wish more guys would jump on this wagon. The world doesn't need more people...but it DOES need more good sex.
TychoTychoAlba
Tbf it's not reversible, so it's not really good for guys who arent sure if they ever want kids.
landbaronness42
You can always freeze a few fishies just in case. Family friend did this before he had chemo just in case.
CallThisAUsername
You know, I always hated condoms too, but never considered a snip before I fell in love (really, this time) with a woman who told me clearly and directly she dislikes kids and never wants to have any. From then on, knowing all I do about the side effects of hormonal birth control on women, it became something I really wanted to do. And it's sweet to know my girl won't have to worry ;)
DocMilsap
Woke up? They put you all the way under for it? No judgement or anything, but I thought that was typically done with local anesthesia. I’d prefer to be totally under.
TacoPoweredHelicopter
Local, basically painless, quick for mine. There are large risks with being put under.
masarian
Mine was local. Too quick and easy to need full sedation.
GlowstickJedi
Same. Mine was done under local. In, small talk with nurse to distract, clamp, snip, cauterize, dress, done. Virtually no pain at all either, just dull ache for 1-2 days after.
DocMilsap
I’ve been told the procedure is basically like tying your shoes, just with an extra step or two. I’ve also heard of the “bladeless” vasectomy, in which they essentially use a nail to poke a hole and pull the rest of the hole open with their hands.
masarian
Mine they excised and then cauterized. The knot tying method is not permanent and can reverse itself.
Meatwadlegend
When I got mine done, I was literally sprayed with a water gun on my sack filled with numbing liquid. Felt a tad bit of pressure, nothing painful, but was awake for the entire thing and done in about 5-10min.
CallThisAUsername
Depends on the surgeon. Mine told me flatly he hears men moaning, see them fidget, and even move during the intervention, and it's not just unnerving, wrong moves and fidgetting can make things worse and lenghten recovery. He told me calmly that he always wanted to be a surgeon, not a butcher, and if I wanted a bodge job done he would convey my request to some colleague of his. Hearing that, I decided "okay, I want that one". No regrets.
bkcantthinkofanythingclever
Statement is kinda of confusing, I assuming you were talking about wanting his option of full anesthesia?
TacoPoweredHelicopter
Anesthesia has some big risks associated with it, I question your doctor's choices.

I had one issue and the doc just said “huh that doesn’t usually happen. Let me give you some more.” Never felt anything after that.
CallThisAUsername
Thank you, friend. And kudos to you too for going through with it !
exlurker42
Most often it is, but it does depend on the doctor in question. And an office that usually does local might do a full if the patient seems twitchy.
JustinWasHere
Yeah I was put all the way under for mine too. Some doctors do it with just local anesthesia. But many doctors believe you get better results with anesthesia. Less of a chance of infection and and more precision with an unconscious patient rather than an anxious moving awake patient.
EyeMaMeatPopsical
Just a shot in the bean bags. Wait a few minutes. Then the doc went to town. No sedation here. It wasn’t bad. I did have pain for about a month. Not terrible but it always felt like they were inflated. Then it finally just went away
spongerX
Mine was local. Would not call it pleasant but not the worse pain I've had. Could have been made less painful with some surface anasthetic before injecting anasthetic directly into my balls multiple times. Including mid surgery and then again when I was complaining about feeling things mid procedure. Was a lot cheaper and less risky than general though.
masarian
Don’t forget you are still dangerous until you go in for your specimen collection in a few months.
XeononSolomon
That's how my father was born.
HuskerCO
I have known two people in my life that were children of vasectomy, so don't mess around before the follow up
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
There's also a chance that it heals itself. A checkup every year or do doesn't hurt.
1ahorseIbowdeepinme
I still had swimmers several months later
masarian
Yup. Gotta make sure you clear the pipes fully.
CallThisAUsername
Yep ! Already have the prescription for a spermogram in three months' time. Until them, no horizontal tango without a hat on.
1ahorseIbowdeepinme
I had to go back 3 times for a count

You forgot to start your reply with Yup!

If that's what it takes to keep my girl safe, I will, too.
