I was taught to put them in the freezer about 15-20 minutes before cooking. Put them to sleep first

The modern method is to euthanize them with a chef's knife before putting them in the pot of boiling water. They don't scream when you boil them alive, though. That was a myth. They don't have lungs to scream with. The screaming sound was from air escaping from the shell.
