While not a race, DK64 also had the minigame Beaver Bother which was broken. The beavers wouldn't go in the hole unless you got them to approach it in a very specific way. They'd react as if there was an invisible wall around the hole. Fuck that minigame.

That was awful, but I remember that after a certain point I did kind of figure out how to herd them into it relatively efficiently. I basically went from not being able to do it at all to being able to consistently do them in 1-2 tries.

So many of those old games, it was about figuring out the nuance of the jank. Like figuring out how to make Super Mario 64's camera work.

If I recall, it also made up the biggest percentage of the minigames.

Seems right. So frustrating. I seem tor remember some of the other minigames had their issues too. DK64 was rushed to meet a holiday deadline if I remember right and that's why it's so buggy compared to other Rareware games. With Lanky Kong you can use his stretchy arm punch to clip through the level block guy and enter levels before you're supposed to.
