Friends is the definition of a sitcom. It's the situations that are funny. The plot and the relationships. Not really the jokes.

Friends was filmed in front of a studio audience. It didnt have a canned laugh track.
kwkspectre
If you edited out the laugh tracks, you would need to edit out the space where they used to be. Much less awkward.
davesrandomstuff
For any show "filmed in front of live audience", that is meaningless, they can still add extra laughter in post.
Watch enough sitcoms, panel shows etc. and you'll start to recognize certain more distinctive reused, recorded laughs.

Weird this shows up now...I recently started rewatching the series lol. Yea, its cheesy but I still find it has some great comedy.

I'll point out that somehow, when they recorded in London, you could still hear the audience laughing.

Live audience are mostly people that adore the show and the comedians, they usually laugh at anything. Also, most sets have cues for audienc

It's like how you'll likely laugh when a friend tells a joke that wouldn't be remotely funny if told by a stranger.

Most live audiences are told when to laugh, so it's not much of a difference.

Editing out the track changes the timing. Timing is important in humor. Good jokes can be ruined with bad timing, so this premise if flawed.
Shmaaw
But the man's objective is to show that the show is unfunny. If anything, that lends to strengthen the premise.

“I removed every third word from it’s always sunny in Philadelphia. Look how unfunny it is.”

Not really. He would be artificially making it unfunny by making the timing seem unnatural.
We are assuming a lot about a hypothetical comic characters motives, but I don't think he's concerned about it seeming natural...
Right, but if you wanted to prove that the show was ALWAYS unfunny, deliberately ruining the timing doesn't do that.

They still use either pre-recorded laughter, or edit it on top to make it sound as it is seen on TV. The audience that they have is far
too small for the sound of the laugh tracks.
