I recently had cause to become a big fan of Belgium (https://imgur.com/gallery/E3JwRum) but if you'd asked me a few weeks ago what I knew about the country, it would have been something like

"Well uh... the waffles of course... and... it's near France and Germany... right?"

So come along with this clueless American while I learn a little about my new favorite country where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.

^ Actual photo of OP on the way to learn about Belgium ^

The first weird thing I found was that there's a King AND multiple parliamentary governments, but sometimes there's no national government at all, and that's apparently not a big deal.

https://www.brusselstimes.com/124777/belgium-breaks-own-record-for-longest-period-without-government

Next - Let's say for the sake of argument that you're a vampire. You've just bought your first velvet cloak and finally saved up enough for a down payment on that countryside castle you've always dreamed about. So - you head off to Transylvania, right?

Nope. You go to Belgium. Most castles out of anyone anywhere.

Every other country in the world needs to step up their castle game.

Bigass taxes, but they fund the healthcare system, education, and social security.

Based on the memes I came across while researching this, it kinda seems like maybe a little more of that should go to roads? Belgians, any thoughts on this?

They really like statues of things peeing on things. Not just the famous Mannekin Pis pictured above, but there's a girl version called Jeanneke Pis (which I'm not posting here for multiple reasons) and a dog one as well called Zinneke Pis.

And then there's the chocolate

I've learned that you do not argue with a Belgian about chocolate.

Just don't.

And of course the beer. It seems that there are over 1,000 different varieties of beer brewed in Belgium, and EACH ONE HAS ITS OWN GLASS.

That one on the bottom, third from the right - I believe that's called the Walter White Ale.

They have a beer pipeline, guys. A beer pipeline.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jul/08/bruges-pipe-dream-a-reality-beer-pipeline

Also fries. It seems they made fries first. One article I encountered said that it wasn't so much about France taking claim, more about American soldiers buying them from French-speaking people (in and around Belgium) and dubbing them French Fries as a result. I dunno. Wasn't there.

Speaking of which, it's an extremely multilingual country. The data I found says that about 10% are FULLY bilingual or more, with most people even in the single-language regions speaking at least a little of another.

Things I'll just brush over because this post got long:

* Belgium was the second country in the world to legalize gay marriage
* They invented the Smurfs and the Saxophone (though I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that there was debate about the saxophone)
* Many public bathrooms are paid access only. That's a little weird, guys.
* Sadly, Belgium has its share of racism/Islamophobia/far-right extremism

(Disclaimer: I deliberately didn't touch on Belgian war history and such, as I don't yet feel qualified to explain or debate that)

You forgot to mention their weird way of drinking coffee. They dip their nose into the froth on top. Hence why it's called a, "Belgian Dip." A Belgian doctor told me about that one.

Approaching Belgium via Lake Woebegone, I see. Reminds me of a book I need to get back to. Thanks! Also, Lindeman's Lambic.

I went to Ghent. Massive castles. Everywhere. Cobblestone streets. It’s very romantic. River going through the center with paddle guys doing the paddle thing. Longest line to get into anywhere. McDonald’s. Massive line. And these were Americans in that line, it was locals. Apparently it was the new big thing and everyone was loving it. I drank three beers

Belgian fries are absolutely divine! They are served with a lot of different sauces, not just the traditional ketchup or mustard. Had them earlier this year and this post got me wanting more!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Traditional in Belgium would be mayonnaise ;)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can’t argue with that! My favorite by far was the Dallas sauce. Those chunks of caramelized onion are on another level!

#7 Took continuing ed on treating PTSD from a Dutch psychologist. She wrapped up an example by saying, "... and now, when she has M&Ms, she doesn't think of her father's abuse. She thinks, 'This really isn't very good chocolate'."

I have it on good authority that solar-powered parking meters don't work there because "there's no fucking sun in Belgium!"

As an Australian, Belgium seems like a place I'd like to live. I don't mind high taxes in a functional society.

Belgian Chocolate is the food of the gods. American chocolate is chocolate flavored.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I live in Germany and even I'll say that my (admittedly distant) memory of Belgian chocolate was that it was the best. Both are miles--I mean kilometers--beyond American, though

#9 IMHO the best beer in the world is second from left right, second row top from bottom: Trippel Karmeliet. Do yourself a favour and taste it once in your life. Incredible beer

@OP I fear that I must inform you that Belgium does not exist. Find more information on https://zapatopi.net/belgium/

yup, if you follow the water on google maps from their location, you end up passing the referenced fortress

#5 Funny how one of these two statues is considered as "oh how cute a little boy taking a pee" whereas the other one would immediately be pounced on as something illegal to be banned at once by the mods.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yeah but if the boy was in the same pose as the girl, I for one wouldn't post that either

#7 I did this. Mainly cause I was having fun being an asshole, and it was initially lighthearted with a Belgium friend initially- but I pretended I had never heard of Belgium chocolate, or Belgium waffles, and told them that "they must not be that good, then." Asked if they meant German chocolate/waffles. I eventually had to stop and apologize cause they had gotten legitimately upset haha. Ultimately it fine, but I didn't realize it was such a big thing.

You forgot about the comics! Tintin, Spirou, Smurfs, Lucky Luke, et. al.

2 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 0

BOERKE! You can't forget about Boerke (or Dickie - depending on Dutch v French)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah it needs more than a word about the smurfs, it is so huge and so good.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It says Smurfs.

Spirou is French-Belgian i think, the creator being French and the comic first being published in a Belgian comic book.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The first artist (Rob-Vel) was French, but he only worked on Spirou for a relatively short while (due to WWII), and was followed by two legendary Belgian creators, first Jijé and then Franquin, who were the ones who really defined the series: Jijé introduced the sidekick Fantasio, and Franquin established the whole universe + continuity. And since Rob-Vel's work remained largely out of print until recently, his Spirou has been somewhat ignored, as more of an early prototype than the "original."

That beer on the bottom 3rd rightish Pauwel Kwak. Comes in that wood holder so drivers of horse carriages (that probably has a better term in English) could more easily take it on the road. So the story goes. Extremely delicious I might add.

2 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We used to sell it, I was told the wood was stop you warming the glass with your hand and altering the beer temp, I could be the victim of a convincing Rep though.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah kinda seems like the ones with handles and stems would solve that pretty reasonably

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a beer glass collection that started because of a long weekend to Belgium, most of the collection is from there. When I came home I shipped 7 large boxes of stuff - two boxes were carefully packed glasses (and they all survived!). Have two of the Kvak and they’re great conversation starters

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It was in fact just a marketing ploy, it never was used by coachmen.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Which is very useful until you try to drink it, and the first buble of air goes into the bulb, generating a wave of beer all over your face. Enjoyable anyway

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hence the name: kwak, from the sound it makes. Source: belgium friends.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I freaking LOVE Belgium! Been several times. I heard a Belgian say that they have been invaded by every major European culture and they kept the parts they liked.
As far as frites, my understanding of the name is from the cut. I don't really care, as long as I can eat them.
Adolphus Sax is credited with inventing the saxophone. He is from a small Wallonian village near the French border. My favorite brewery, Brasserie Caracole, has a beer named Saxo in his honor.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Patat = potatoe, frites = (deep)fry

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh btw. anyone who is up for a wild ride: read up in Adolphus Sax and his incentives / near deaths. Interesting guy to say the least

#7 That's because they don't put butyric acid in hte chocolate.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

American chocolate (read: Hershey's or similar) doesn't add butyric acid, it's naturally present in the intentionally spoiled milk used.

Mannekin Pis is rather disappointing IRL, their steak and fries with beer is generally not, If someone describes themselves as either Flemish or Walloon, it is unwise to continue calling them Belgian. I love Antwerp, quite like Liege, but Brussels is nearly horrible enough to be considered French, The small towns age are usually great

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

"Bussel is nearly horrible enough to be considered French" because every French town is ugly ? I guess you have not been very far visiting France, if you have ever been there.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have visited far more smaller towns in the Netherlands, Belgium and the Rhineland than in France, so my view may be skewed. I like to wander, visiting historical sites and eating off the beaten track. My experience of France has mainly been Northern Cities, I can't say I have any fond memories. Having pretty terrible language skills, but willing to have a go with some help from learning Sign Language (think pictures, not sentences), I have met a welcoming response in the first three areas.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Brussels is a bit of a shithole... Source: I spend over 40 hours a week there (might be a bit biased though)

No, I think you got a good look.

I live in Germany and let me fucking tell you we CANNOT STEP UP OUR CASTLE GAME. There's literally a castle on every fucking hill. There's nowhere left! The castle overpopulation is insane! I can see TWO from my apartment window. This madness has to stop. I can 10000% guarantee Germany has more castles & castle ruins than anyone. It's... it's just so many. Please, send help

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

is there someone building one on your doorstep as you typed this?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

well now I'm paranoid

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Came here to say that our German castle game is, has been, and hopefully always will be on point - both in quality and quantity. 😊🏰 https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_von_Burgen_und_Schl%C3%B6ssern_in_Deutschland

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

What the fuck. Okay so ACTUALLY?? I can see two ex-ruins spots too, apparently. Or... three. Five castles stood in view distance of my apartment once upon a time lol. One of them was my old hiking spot... had no idea that used to be a castle :( That said a few of these have nothing left on their spots. Sadface

That's a line dance, every one forms a line and it's diamond time. Such a horror on what was already such a horror, the African slave trading kingdoms

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't ruin this guys dream lol

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did a post on that on Imgur...it was not a pleasant experience...

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, what happened then is still very representative of us :) We know what happened was fucked. You can literally say something terrible about almost every country out there. Get out of here.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Too many people think that what happened in Congo had anything to do with the Belgian people but at that time belgian people themselves were just poor slobs who hated their king leopold the second, it was only later that schools taught about his accomplishments instead of his atrocities

The keywords to search for are "rubber plantation", "quotas" "king of Belgium" and "crimes against humanity". Also, maybe avoid the photos if you have any empathy at all...

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

you can apply that to most european countries and also a lot of other parts of the world.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. The history of most of the world can be summed up by "people B arrived to find people A were there. They drove them out and took their land. Then people C arrived and found people A and B there, so they drove them out and took their land. Then people D arrived..." The only country that wasn't already occupied when the current inhabitants got there is, I believe, the Falklands. And people have still been killed in disputes over who owned the islands!

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

My fav part is Congo was the private property of the belgian king at the time and he ruled it so brutally that the other colonial powers all went "holy fucking shit Leopold, wtf are you doing?"

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

imagine being such a shitmonger that the people who did haiti called you out for being a monster

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Worst part is the colonial powers gave the Congo to Leopold (as private property because the Belgian Government didn't want colonies) partially because he promised it would be a philanthropic venture and bring the natives humanitarian aid. Boy did he fool em.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

you really, really, seriously do not want to know about the Belgian Congo

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 5

Nah he needs to be aware.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We did some really fucked up shit there. It's like the folks in charge had a look at the atrocities of other colonial powers and went: 'hold my beer'. Very bad.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a Belgian, the darkest parts of history are the most worth learning about.

Wish my country felt that way.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Exactly why the right doesnt like universities. You want to learn history go take a university level course on a specific subject and watch evrything that got shoved down your throat in grade school get blown apart. lot of concenient omissions ans tailored truths.
