This is why we need to take pet ownership more seriously. I called a local shelter and she ranted for like 20 minutes about this stuff.

We adopted an older dog 5 years ago who had spent more than half her life in shelters, she's a spoiled baby now! Do it! Someone, do it!

I have a puppy otherwise I'd get them but they specifically say they need to be only dog. Which is sad we been looking for a playmate
That is difficult when they need to be the only pet.
HatinS8N
How many people did it maul? Because if it didn’t. I’m out.
Our dog hasn't ever mauled anyone, to my knowledge. But she is unusual looking. A beagle and golden retriever mix, she was cagey at first
But has gotten used to everyone and everything. She's grouchy now because she's old barely has teeth so...
KillingTlme
My last dog died at 7 years old from Cushings. I would never adopt a dog over 5 after going through those last 2 years of sadness and bills.
So those of you that do adopt older pets are saints!
She was 5 ish when we got her and she has a few health problems but older dogs are tough for sure.
sykoticflaw
And this is why you should not be allowed to have animals anywhere near you.

Yeah I've been looking at adoptions recently and I see a lot of the "need to be only pet" :( it's usually previous abuse or negligence

kill shelter is just a word for underfunded shelter. often, but not always, kill shelters are shelters legally obligated to take ALL 1/2

I can’t speak for this shelter, but the humane society I’ve volunteered at had runs out through that little door you see in the back, which
were always open if the weather was nice. In addition, they were walked at least three times a day by volunteers, and often taken out to
adoption events at every chance that occurred, which was a lot. It wasn’t as god as being with a loving family 24/7, but it was still loving
