I only used the Chuul so far as a variant animal companion for an evil druid monster the players had to fight.

I remember them from Baldur's Gate. Man can they make a battle be straight fuckery.
They stopped being an issue when we realized our Barbarian could kill around 90 of them in a single round.
Then someone allowed some PC ridiculousness or is playing mindflayers very very poorly. Psychic dmg is the one type they can't resist.
The first one. He was roughly a quarter Punpun on the cheezometer.
I've never enjoyed that, I want to be concerned that we might not make it. But to each their own!
Actually we suffered frequent losses (Entire group was first-timers) but also the GM had to keep homebrewing monsters because as 1/2
That's why they're my favourite D&D monsters. Beholders may be on the guide cover, but Illithids are the true masters of fuckery!
