...with a natural range that extends into the northern hemisphere and is one of only four eucalypt species out of more than seven hundred that do not occur in Australia. It is characterized by multi-colored bark.

It look like we’re in Willy Wonka tree from

PNG and Australia were linked until the end of the ice age. Interesting if it's only in PNG not Aus, must have more suited climate/soil.

There's a lot of overlap between the ecology of Northern Queensland and PNG.

I'm baked and I want more

Imagine what Australia would look like if all eucalypts were colorful like this. Seen "What Dreams May Come?"

Wdmc is a decent example of when the drugs kick in

The title and description are literally the first paragraph from wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_deglupta

This is an early April fools prank and I’m not falling for it.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ok, who mixed LSD into the water supply?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's just the bark isn't it ?

5 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

yes

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If you're asking about the color, yes. The bark falling off naturally at different times causes the tree to look multi colored.

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Dope. Now If I could grow a forest of them in range of the northern lights whilst remaining in firefly territory, well...that'd be cool.

I tought some let his kid loose with a box of crayons.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of all the eucalyptus species we have here in Aus I wish we had a rainbow one too :(

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are the trees that grow snozberries, right?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also found on Hawaii which is subtropical.

And Los Angeles. All over the damn place

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The ones in Hawaii are introduced by the way, you can find other introduced populations in California, Texas and Florida too.

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yup. You'd think the colors are amped up in this pic but they're not. They're so cool they look fake.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also in Florida. Well, the Australia exhibit at the Miami zoo, anyway.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought Hawai'i was tropical.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hawaii has at least four different climate zones if you mean tropical climate, what longitude they are in is fixed lol

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is, at 19 degrees north it's definitely entirely within the tropics.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

parts of it are, parts are subtropical.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think I saw one on Kauai..

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They're on kauai. I've got a 20lb bag of honey from them, sitting on my shelf, from a beekeeper on the island. Makes great mead

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I saw a bunch when I went there!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're definitely on Oahu

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

these are also on hawaii and they taste like rainbow bubble gum

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I could I would grow one in my backyard

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The branches fall off and break/kill whatever is underneath.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

https://www.gardenia.net/plant/eucalyptus-deglupta check if it's in your growing zone.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The 55+ days over 115 in Phoenix last year killed 2 eucalyptus in my yard. I didn't think it was possible to kill them.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Incorrect, Australia has many eucalypts that are native to rainforest.

5 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but is that where they usually are?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mountain ash ?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think the original Wikipedia page the caption copies is referring to tropical rainforests only, not temperate ones like those in Tasmania.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’d urge them to take a trip to the Daintree then

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

We have tropical and subtropical rainforests in Australia. There are definitely eucalypts growing there.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Is this true color or is it over saturated like the majority of these "wow cool!" nature photos are?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Looks modified to me. These trees are truly very colorful and awesome in real life, but not so neon. At least the ones I've seen in Hawaii

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look at the background leaves and grass - someone yanked the contrast and saturation way up. The actual trees are quite colorful though.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have one growing in USDA Zone 9

5 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

I bought 2 @ $300 each. Nurtured them like babies. Both died within a year. Super disappointed. They're so beautiful when they're mature.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Outside?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes. It’s doing OK. Arrived as 1.5M twig, is now about 3M and starting to shed layers of bark. No color expected for another year or two

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That would be one of the bordering zones like 10 or 8. This one is inside Zone 9.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How old is it?! How did it not die? Please tell me your cultivating secrets!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Zone 9? Who did you guys nominated for the hunger games ?

5 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 2

Growing zones just tell you expected temp ranges for outdoor growing of plants. I had to learn mine after buying a house and half my 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Landscaping attempts died over the winter. Well, not half... Just my poor pineapple palm :(

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reaaalllyyy?!?!! Omg landscaping goals. Where did you buy?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

9b sure. 9a no.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok so I’m in 9b and have a customer who has two and I’m terrified they’re going to die within a year. Are there secrets to success?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just well drained soil and a lot of water. Best if you plant it near a pond.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No secrets; it’s increased in height by 2m/6ft in 2 years. There is a grove of 40m+ eucalyptus within 100-150m so good company or teachers?
