That's how the kill touch snail pact works. It is what grants you immortality, and only it can take it away.

If I recall, you just gain immortality, it's not granted by the snail, though it does kill you on touch. This little guy seems like an on/off toggle, maybe?

Perhaps we just never knew where the immortality came from. Though it seems that with it comes knowledge of the snail. Seems like a pact to me.
