i think you mean ice tends to do this when forming in warmer conditions (i.e. not much less than 0). right?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

The hot and the cold are both so intense, Put 'em together, it just makes sense!!

You know what else melts as it gets warmer? Everything.

12 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 3

helium?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on the pressure. Some things may sublimate.

12 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Listen here you little shit...

12 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Jus kid jus kid. Daddies loves you fat tits.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

What about dry ice at sea level?

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

[See current top response]

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it got posted at about the same time as mine. Not everything melts...

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Under sufficient pressure, carbon dioxide from dry ice would transition to the liquid phase upon melting.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what about paper?

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Fries?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

GET OUT! ...one every semester...

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If it doesn't have something like oxygen to burn with? Yes, Paper will melt.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

paper will melt, just like ever other dumb ass comment

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Liquid nitrogen might be exempt... I don't think there's a realistic way to freeze it in the first place.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Liquid anything is exempt. It is already past its melting point by definition.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or at it's equilibrium point (or homeostasis or something like that. it's been a number of years). Where the same amount freezes as melts.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...since most other liquids are easy enough to freeze solid and then re-melt.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nitrogen, then. You can't get it colder than it's liquid form, so you can't melt it.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nitrogen freezes below −210 °C, which is quite achievable. It's awesome, check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM04U5BO3Ug

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In case anyone was wondering, Ice will always melt in straight lines, not curves. That's why ice spheres last longest in beverages.

12 years ago | Likes 145 Dislikes 38

Science bitch!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Dude, please don't make stuff up, this is how urban legends get started and make use less intelligent as a species.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not true. A sphere has, per volume, the smallest possible surface area. This means that less heat can enter and so it melts slower.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On a side note, bubbles are spherical for the same reason. Surface tension pulls in the liquid to minimize surface area.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think that's right at all. A sphere has less surface area, that's why they stay frozen longer.

12 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

But if this was just bullshit meant to fool people, braVO, and congrats on top comment.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The water in this pond was still enough and froze slowly enough to form large regular crystals. Ice cubes are not like that at all.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

thats a total lie. the truth probably has more to do with water crystallisation in very specific conditions ~high purity and close to 0 temp

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Things tend to form larger crystals when left very still, and left to freeze very slowly.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Then why does the lake I live near have a very large, curvy, ice floe?

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well he is the Lord of the North, I think he knows a few things about ice

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

*was

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

for reals?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sadly, no, this guy is just making things up about ice.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe something to do with its crystal lattice structure. But don't take my word for it. I got a B- in gen. chem. 4 semesters ago.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not for reals.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ice spheres last longest but it's because spheres have the smallest surface area for their volume.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TMYK.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

No. The crystal structure of ice in an ice cube is so irregular that this would have no effect on it.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TLYK for believing it

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And Spheres last longest because they have the lowest surface area to volume ratio possible.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where do the give you ice spheres?!

12 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Nice bars.

thats freaking amazing

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The copper is actually transferring heat to the ice, not "absorbing cold", but that's still cool

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neat!

that was hilariously horrifying

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Dude, tag/NSFW that or something.

12 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

... no, spheres last the longest because they have the smallest surface area to volume ratio of any shape.

12 years ago | Likes 116 Dislikes 2

Y'all been told.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

SHOTS FIRED.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Science!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And this pattern is because of the ice froze slowly enough to form large crystals, not because it only melts in straight lines.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1
