Ah man, it's good to see some appreciation for traditional animation. It's sad that 3D is overall just cheaper than hiring 2D artists...

FYI: James Baxter is the name of the legendary Disney animator who did #20. that's why the horse was named that, he was a guest animator!

In a way, the pencilwork gives the familiar scenes fresh lives of their own. I simply adore linework, & I'm even more appreciative of these.
TheCaffeinatedPanda
I never fully appreciate how much effort goes into this stuff until I see it like this.
UnPossibleMagician
And then you look at those re used animation compilations.
TheCaffeinatedPanda
Can you blame them, though? I'd be fed up halfway through my first scene...
UnPossibleMagician
I thought the moral of 2016 is that: "Yes, you can blame anyone for anything." Anyways, I've heard it was due to time-constraints awhile ago
iLoveToCombineGifs
And theres so much more stuff you dont really see
jiggscasey
I did 9 months on a 12 second clip for a digital short (part time tho). I can't imagine doing 2d.
TheProofIsInDePudding
I've been doing some simple 2D animations. It takes me an hour to animate 1 second. And these are simple scribbles.
menschmaschine
Try holding a painted animation cel with the key frame still attached. It's insane how much work went to cel animation.
TheCaffeinatedPanda
Any animation at all, man. I a massive weeb, I appreciate cel animation too.
TheCaffeinatedPanda
*I'm, fuck.
menschmaschine
I own a few cels for from a generally unkown series called Oniisama E and it scares that I actually own a part of the show's production now.
TheCaffeinatedPanda
I think I've heard of that one. I'm not generally a fan of that art style, but the effort it takes is so much more than the cleaner stuff.
Falos
Uncheesed work is beautiful but insanely labor intensive, as in "doesn't justify itself". Most viewers won't savor it, so the shortcuts just
Falos
make sense. Fewer frames and increasing digital tricks made me sad but they mean more stuff gets made. Except the 3D cel stuff, fuck that.

Imherefortheanimalpics
This was amazing!
SudoNimm
Seriously though, how does this work? Do they just take pictures of all of their drawings and then make that the movie?
jiggscasey
It's common to film yourself acting it out first, as a movement reference.
Littleman88
Pretty much, yeah. Animation is literally just individual illustrations viewed very quickly in an order. But then, so is live action film.
COCKSLINGERCHRIS
I'm in my first year of animation at Sheridan College and I just spent 6 hours animating a balloon.

punasiipi
Yeah. Here you realize, that somebody has ACTUALLY drawn them. I mean, they look kinda like they just magically appeared in the final image.
Abandonedusername
Fantasia.
neufboeuf
The artist also has to be an expert at depicting weight and gravity, divided by frame speed. Otherwise the characters would feel unnatural.
neufboeuf
The walking goose gif is an excellent example, simple shapes, but each bulge swings and moves at its own momentum to convey natural waddle.
menschmaschine
And then someone had to painted them too.
IReallyLoveLasers
Put on colt 45 or because I got high and scroll down these gifs, the singing almost matches the drawings and have me a huge giggle fit :,D
TheScarfyDoctor
Animation in general, or 2D and 3D art like this, it's soooo much work
flygonbreloom
Hell, even individual steps are astoundingly complex on further inspection. Shading? There's a reason there's dedicated shaders. It's hard!
ElPoloDiablo
I suppose with 3D you can often reuse the assets, so that helps a lot, but yeah, it's astonishing how much work both require.
steelbun
In 2D you can reuse them too. Kinda. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbjVjZrrE3w

I love that movie to bits, but be warned it's schmaltzy even by Disney standards. Might be difficult to enjoy without the nostalgia goggles.
sdfq3gb23gb423g2
Did you know that Disney almost went out of business when they were making it? Walt had died, so it's the first movie made without him 1/2
boccs
Do we have a source on this? Walt died in '66, but this wasn't released until very late 1973. There had been plenty of releases in between.
Drzhivago138
Robin Hood had been in a sort of development hell for many years before. As early as 1938, Walt Disney was interested in doing a film (1)
Drzhivago138
about Reynard the Fox (from French fairy tales), but was hesitant about how to make a trickster the hero. It wasn't until shortly after (1)
Drzhivago138
his death that production started on Robin Hood, keeping some of the same concepts developed for Reynard. The Jungle Book and The (3)
sdfq3gb23gb423g2
And it's made with lots of recycled animations from older movies. Also it's their last English fable film.
wrekkaflair
Definitely can tell :c Half of the sequences are clearly from earlier movies... Rewatched as an adult and the plot is a bit wanting too.
sdfq3gb23gb423g2
too true. they wanted to make something simple and safe that wouldn't push too many boundaries.

As an animator, this makes me nostalgic. Then I see the stripes on Shere Khan's back and the work Milt Kahl did, and go back to my computer
TopgunIsTheBestMovieEver
I'm still struck at the "rough drawings" Glen Keen did for Tarzan. Pure art. Try to find that anymore.

Glen Keane is a master of the pose. Find videos of him working ot reaching a class, and just see the poses flow out of his pencil.

I got to watch him over his shoulder for a few minutes while he was at Disney. It was astonishing.

that is the movements of the character not the actual look of the art.

So much respect. I took animation 101 in high school and it took like 2 weeks to animate a shitty bird flying across a page once
PeacockFeathers
You had animation classes in high school!!?? Jealous!!!

Seriously. My school barely covered the basics, and lacked air conditioning. Ever have flies attempt to seek refuge in your nostrils? Sucks.

datbaish
It looks like it might be Hexxus from Ferngully but Im not 100% sure
gagarivard
Hey I thought of this too!
GitRightStik
Nah, he had a skeleton and robe at that point, no muscles or bat wings. This is the super big demon in Fantasia.
MankHoody
That's what it reminded me of too, but I think it's from Fantasia 2000
datbaish
I bet you're right!
TiniestFox
Yes sir. It's the Stravinsky Firebird.
OldFriendForDinner
It's the Stravinsky Firebird sequence from Fantasia
RaysSunny

IceMeltAll

SanzOfTime
Do you mean Fantasia 2000?
OldFriendForDinner
Yep. That one.
MackDaddy22
Did anyone else have a crush on Robin Hood as a kid even though he was a cartoon fox?
anonus

SpaceRefugee

MackDaddy22

Every art book I've tried to use
Littleman88
Right? I swear, the guidelines they advise a novice to use only work when you can already draw well without them.
Ophichius
It really depends on the book. A lot of the "learn to draw X" books are pretty bad about that. There are some great books on fundamentals1/2
Ophichius
Though. Practically anything from Andrew Loomis or Betty Edwards. And of course, The Natural Way to Draw by Nicolaides
Ophichius
Have you tried Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards? It's one of the best books for anyone wanting to learn to draw.
Kudoskid
No I haven't. I gave up on that dream when I realized I have no creativity of my own :p
Ophichius
I can't recommend it enough, even if you think you have no creativity, find a copy at your local library and try the exercises. You'll 1/2
Ophichius
probably surprise yourself quite a bit. Lots of folks say they can't draw, but in my experience everyone can with some practice.

Movie called sinbad excellent movie
CheeseIsNaturesFudge
That GIF reminded me of why I like sinbad, I was wondering why I liked it so much... TO THE NETFLIX MOBILE!
anaxandrew
I would like to know as well, it looks like it's from DreamWorks. Can't find it though.
NiceLegsDaisyDukesMakesAMAAANOUTOFYOOOUUUU
Sinbad. You know, the one with Eris and her EPIC HAIR?
NonConformistFlamingo
Dear god I love that movie just her alone. Her animation is so.... FLUID. It's mesmerizing. The whole movie is amazing, but ERIS... <3
Textuality
Eris was so awesome. I loved how they animated her movement. No mundane "walking", she FLOWED from place to place. :)
CoffeeIsTasty
Design is my passion.
iLoveToCombineGifs
Animation is my passion...
CoffeeIsTasty
We should combine forces!
iLoveToCombineGifs
Yeah why not:)
breakinginsanity
Mine too. I wanted to go into animation when I discovered it was a thing you could actually go to college for. Mistake made. All 3d crap >
iLoveToCombineGifs
i just got my bachelors degree in 2d animation this summer:) so it is possible...
breakinginsanity
Wrong school for it too. Many years down the road discovered design. I love it. Sadly I don't have enough time atm for it :( at least was >
breakinginsanity
Going to a better school for it :)
ExcuseMe2
Disney, why did you shut down your major 2D animation department :( It was an end of an era.
mousemochi
They started it back up but after PatF and Winnie the Pooh didn't make much money they said they'd only do another one if it fit the project
ChlordBungus
"Screw the pursuit of excellence, we need to make EVEN MORE money with cheap 3d mediocrity."
astralfields
3D isn't cheap. Not at all. But they all look similar because they're not hand-drawn, there is much less artistic style, less flavor.
ChlordBungus
Sure I can give you that.
Littleman88
Because 3D is actually cheaper to produce for still spectacular results. They even have the tech to make it look 2D. Look up "Paper Man."
ExcuseMe2
There IS a difference though.
Littleman88
Always going to be a difference. 3D movies are in, but 2D TV shows are still a thing because budget 3D looks like garbage.
TopgunIsTheBestMovieEver
But seriously! All of the skill, experience and talent... gone. I'm happy the kept Glen keen, and a few other animators, but seriously.
mousemochi
Glen Keane left a few years ago to pursue other things, and I think the only ones from that era still there are Eric Goldberg and Mark Henn
TopgunIsTheBestMovieEver
Ya. There are a few others left, but they've moved away from the work itself and into producing and such.
