Wholesome Horror for sure. You could say it's right on the button.
DrBlackJack
My favorite kind of horror! I like most horror, but there's just something satisfying about taking something that should be horrific and giving it a wholesome twist.
Ucanthankmel8r
Wow, I found this heartbreaking and strangely beautiful, with an intriguing and different subject matter. I'm supposed to be cooking dinner but I was hooked!
DrBlackJack
Lol, sorry(ish) to distract you, but if you ever need another distraction check out my other stories on my account here or on reddit!
Ucanthankmel8r
Thanks, I'll definitely check them out after the kids have gone to bed!

I haven’t been this enthralled in quite some time. Thank you
DrBlackJack
Well, if you wanna read some more of my stuff, check out my account here or on reddit. I write 4 chapters of my main series Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays I write short stories like this!
Totallyscrewedinaustin
Hope she mentions something to her husband about it...you know, as a heads up for when the kid starts drawing?
AnnieGitchYerGun
I know, right?! Or leaves a letter for her daughter explaining. Also - what an amazing heirloom, tradition, keepsake or whatever you would call Mrs. Noface. I mean the button. Passed to each generation. Protecting them, caring for them.
ToastedEggSandwich
Interesting concept, but if cursed items are so prevalent and believed-in, why wouldn't people wonder if one was involved with this kid's weird drawings? And why would muggers take anything that wasn't cash?
DrBlackJack
Well, the idea isn't so much that they're common, but rather than you never know. If even one in ten million people have such an item, you can bet they'll try and off load it pretty quick! Think of it like cabin in the woods. It's common enough some people are aware, but rare enough most people live in blissful ignorance.
ToastedEggSandwich
Fair enough!

Oh hey, been a while since I read something of yours. Liked that sci fi 'dragon' fic. Still need to finish reading that one, part 3 is done.
DrBlackJack
My current one, "Of Men and Spiders" is IMO better (benifit of expirience gained in Dragons) and more manageable. I think it's gonna wrap up around chapter 50ish, and the chapter are only about 2/3rds the size of Dragons. (Plus I'm writing 4 chapters a week now!)

That is a short story, lol

This is a short story! Most of my writing is book length.

I wonder about the logistics of how cursed items come to be here. A button seems like an odd thing to carry a curse. Was it originally a whole article of clothing, with the single button being all that remains after the years (and perhaps attempts to destroy the cursed thing) have taken their toll? If so what would it mean if there were several pieces left instead? Could there be another button out there with its own Mrs. Noface? Or maybe with only a bloody ripped-off face attached? Or maybe 1/2
ArmoredWanderer
a different figure from the same curse? Mrs. Noface's white gown seems to imply a wedding. Is there another button with Mr. Noface? If the original article of clothing had the whole wedding you might have other scraps of it containing bloody bridesmaids, or the best man and you might be able to find them, and recreate the full thing... or maybe they were lost forever as more and more of the original item got destroyed. 2/2
lbargomancer
It could be that Mrs. Noface died a violent death and the button was part of her assailant's outfit that she ripped off trying to defend herself? She has a bloody-ringed void for a face because hers was utterly destroyed in the assault, and she haunts the button seeking to avenge herself on its owner.
ArmoredWanderer
Could work. Though, given the fact that she seems to rip out the mugger's face in one piece I'm inclined to think something similar might have happened to her. Her face isn't just caved in, it's been removed somehow, leaving a void. Maybe she was the victim of some sort of dark ritual?
