Go go lack of self esteem.

I worry that my inexperience and lack of intelligence will alienate me from any game I join.

A friend in my group is on her 3rd campaign. Roleplays great, doesn't know the rules. We don't care. Don't worry! People won't mind helping.

Hm. Would D&D games not be pretty much the most "accepting of new nerd" environment known to humanity?

There's tons of games that welcome new people. It's just a matter of getting the courage to apply to games. I even declined the 1st game 1/2

I got accepted to because of anxiety. Since March, I'm in 2 long term campaigns and have played a handful of one-shots. SO MUCH FUN!

Dude I've always wanted to get into D&D, but never could find a group.

Roll20 seems to be an awesome tool for it, but actually trying to join a group is a bit daunting for me.

I've been looking and it seems like there are quite a few they just start while I'm at work.

there must be a room for beginners and vets to mix. if not, why not make one. Lot's of ppl love to teach their hobbies to newbies = )

That’s how I got into MTG, found the right people who brought me in! They also promptly destroyed me, but made it a fun learning experience!

The aforementioned lack of intelligence is a killer.

your sentence structure tells me you are at the very least, an intelligent person. give yourself some credit.

Well you know what they say fake it till you make it.

From what ive seen on this site, lots of old DMs are interested in teaching newbies. Just gotta find a decent party

might I suggest reading the webcomic, Goblins? It probably wont make you a better player but if you like D&D its really good.
