2-minute old Monarch Caterpillar

I'm not much of a greenthumb, but I do grow milkweed and foster monarch caterpillars into butterflies. This little guy hatched just as I was checking on them this morning.
Sorry, a banana was too big for scale.

I like to tell kids about how if we grew as much as a caterpillar does, we wouldn't stop growing until we're the size of a school bus!

Even smaller! Their bodies are so compressed in the egg, they expand as they hatch!

Feeding flowers. We also have a lot of lillies, hostas, roses and morning glories for food to attract the butterflies.

I've got a full garden, roses, hollyhocks, iris, sunflowers. I've seen couple different swallow tails, painted ladies, cabbage whites so far
