Socializing is hard

Not in a malicious "I don't care who you are" kind of way, I usually just get too flustered trying not to make a bad first impression. Like
Okay eye contact. Not a creepy amount of eye contact tho. Sweet spot
Firm handshake. Ok not that firm
Smile. Say something welcoming
But don't be overbearing
... shit who was that

I hear you.

ME TOO

I forgot my age, once.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

same with me, "Whats your name?" "Jeff" "Hello... uh... Bob?"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're not alone OP.

Depression affects your memory.

As a child I'd come home and tell my mom I'd made a friend. "Well what's their name" "Oh..Uh. I don't know."

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This might help: make an effort to say their name: "hi I'm Lance Cockstrong" *hand shake* "Good to meet you Lance, I'm Death Incarnate"

have you been playing wolfenstein?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yesssssssss!! The description is me every time I meet someone knew!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I relate to this so much.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do the EXACT same thing. I usually tell them when I meet them that I'm awful with names and that I'll forget, make a joke out of it

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If I want to remember their name and its in a business environment I write it down. If its at like a party I joke about it like that.

It takes me 2-3 meetings to learn names. Good with faces though.

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

I'll remember a face for years but people are just "dude" to me for a while unless I make a name association like same name as carl winslow

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It is my brain's goal to eliminate names and faces immediately, whoever you are.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too. I meet too many people plus I tend to remember someone name only if I'll engage a conversation

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh thank God I'm not the only one!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too, I have a hard time remembering my cousins names... Talk about awkward

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This makes my wife soooo mad but it is something I can't help.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Say their name right after you meet them. Your wife will thank me later.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

hahah, i have tried to remember names and still fully forgot them. i know your pain. then again, i don't talk to people at all so maybe not.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just make a stupid rhyme in your head for everyone, maybe it will help."Harry Truman, weird little human"(thank you Animaniacs for that one)

10 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 1

Yea, using mnemonic tricks like that really helped me. I try to mentally associate a new person's name (or part of it) with a trait

where is Haaaaary Truuuuuman. He's dead in the ground, he's dead in the ground, He's dead dead dead dead ow ow ow.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't think my brain even registers names on first encounters, not because of any reason, it just flies over my head.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do this all the time. Happened when I met a girl once, and just decided that it was not meant to be.

Nice to meet you CarolinHR. I assume that you work in HR? How long have you worked in HR Carolin? Neat. Let me ask you something Carolin...

Associate their hair with their names. It helped me, at least until they cut it.

Thats Walter right? He got this haircut because chemo, right?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

SAaame I can recognize that I've MET someone but I won't be able to remember their name.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One of my coworkers was very forthright about her inability to remember names. It was a memorable interaction, and made things less "fake"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It took me about 7 months to learn the new freshman every year on my baseball team in college.....

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I stopped trying with the freshmen in my sorority

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was lucky were I could just yell, you come help with this or go do that.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I find is the conversation that follows which makes me forget the name. Try repeating it after is said and again at parting. It helps me.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It really doesn't matter if you just say "I'm sorry, what's your name, again?" Also- shake hands and repeat their name when you meet them.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Exactly, I thing if you ask, it seems you are just being honest and engaged in the conversation. Its nice.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This post is literally me too.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just repeat the name as soon as they say it. Like a question if you prefer: "John Smith, is it? I'm OP, nice to meet you, John". Works well

(Kidding, that is good advice)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't see what you wrote before, but you're welcome. Also works well with phone calls you take. "Mrs. Doe, you say? How can I help you?"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in addition to repeating the persons name: Nice to meet you Jon, it helps if you make another association to make it stick like: Uncle Jon

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes! I didn't believe this until I started doing it. Works so well.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My job requires I meet a significant amount of people and I try this all the time and still forget within seconds :-(

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, with a job like that you might have to think of other strategies. But even the mindset "do I actually WANT to know their names" may >>

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>> already help. If you don't really care, it's hard to do it. But it may make your job easier, when people notice that you recognize them

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep. I was terrible with names until I repeated back. No one thinks anything of if.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>> also helps to get their name right, in case you've misunderstood.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yes I often introduce myself as OP

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If I ever meet that colonizing bastard I'll be sure to remember. (That was my first comment , didn't mean to delete it haha)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's proven if you say someone's name to them 3 times upon meeting them you're 90% sure to remember their name. Source: I just made that up.

The psychologist in me got very upset until I finished reading your entire comment. +1.
