Part of the problem is death caps are also having an unusually prolific year. They also look VERY similar a common edible Mushroom frequently found in Mexico and are also found in California. Mushrooms are always dangerous but due to the sudden influx of death caps, the odds of making a mistake are higher than usual so it makes sense there is an increase in deaths this year.

I wouldn't call them "idiots". Even experienced foragers can make mistakes from time to time. That's what makes mushrooms, death caps in particular, so dangerous. Many species can be confused for others that are totally safe.
