1. This movie is a straight up classic! It's a shame it was a commercial failure. Feels like I spent years being alone in my love for it! At least it's now getting the credit it deserves.
2. It was DECADES before I learned that Kurt Russell plays a parody of an action hero. Granted, I was a child when I first saw it, so critical analysis wasn't a thing for me yet. 😆

To me it always felt like the hero of a goofy action comedy accidentally drove his truck into someone else's kung fu movie. It is not his movie and he is just going along with it.

Wrf I had assumed The Golden Child came out years later and was a made-for-tv movie. Tho looking back even as a little kid I dont know why I thought Eddie Murphy would be in a made-for-tv movie.

That's sort of mentioned in the director's commentary. Carpenter and Russell both said that people who thought it was wrong to have a white guy as the hero in a movie with "China" in the name missed the point. Wang was the hero, Jack was the bumbling sidekick.

Wang may have been the competent one and the hero, but Jack is the one who finished off the big bad at the climax. He's the protagonist of the movie.

I agree but through luck and Lopen hubris at his desire to be mortal again. Jack didn't do anything else, Wang got Wind, the old guy got thunder, and cloud did himself in.
It's still true that he's the protagonist, but Wang was the "hero" who for the girl and completed the quest. They can be separate.

The Thing made me a fan, this movie made me love the guy, when I was younger my friend bought an old car that had a cb radio in and we'd make Jack Burton jokes to passing truckers which always got a laugh out of 'em

it is a funny movie :D but i think i've watched all his funny movies, l loved Overboard when he met his future wife Goldie Hawn. Plot was creepy in retrospect, but i was a stupid pre-teen in the 80s. he was still over the top amazing in Death Proof

When I first heard of this movie, I thought it'd be just another of those pseudo-Asian old films that are actually really racist and make a random white guy the hero for no apparent reason.
Luckily I turned out to be wrong, it was a fantastic watch and really funny, as if it was trying to make fun of the very type of film I had problems with.
I should buy it on DvD.

It's a wonderfully upbeat action comedy with a supernatural twist that sends up the buddy comedy genre better than most! One of my fav Kurt Russel performances and characters.

I mean... Spoiler .. he does kill the big bad. Course his own hubris at wanting to be mortal is kinda his downfall..
But yeah no, Wang is awesome and as a young Asian boy in the 80s that character was always my inspiration
