I would say American culture made it so over time, most Americans believe the world revolve around them, nothing matters more than them because they are the most powerful and richest nation in the world. For myself, I didn't know a lot of Americans are drowning in medical bills debt to the point of bankruptcy, because universal healthcare doesn't exist there.

A multicultural question: is the Dutch population sufficiently multilingual that a late-night show can just run a two-minute segment in English and expect their entire audience to more or less get it? (The host introduces the clip in Dutch.)
My perspective is skewed because multilingualism in the US Is particularly rare, and the time I have spent in Europe it's never been hard to communicate with locals using mostly English, but I have met my share of stubbornly monoglot Europeans as well.

As a Dutchie, if you're under 50, you generally speak English fluently, and then French or German conversationally. We're a small country, with very few Dutch speakers, so you pretty much have to learn the basics if you don't want your life to be very small

A lot is subtitled, but yeah, Dutch people generally speak and understand a lot of English. My two sons for example, are 8 and 9 and both speak better English than their teachers. They both could count to ten in English before they could do it in Dutch, thanks to YouTube.

Dutch people generally know several languages. This goes all the way back to the middle ages, if not further. Historically we would learn the languages of our trading partners all over the world to better communicate. Back in grade school we would start learning English at 9/10 years old. Side from that a lot of TV shows and such are subtitled rather than dubbed if not in Dutch.

My very British (now ex-) wife was stunned that I used words like ‘plethora’ in conversation and in the right manner. I’m very Dutch, but have been mustaken for British before. Aside from the directness of some shit I say, I can get away with quite a bit.
Also, Windows in Dutch should be frowned upon with a hammer.
But yes, everyone from genx onward is very, very proficient in English. It’s also a mandatory language in schools.

I have several Dutch friends (online, not here in Oklahoma) and they all speak English as fluently as I do. Maybe more so, what with my "50th in the nation" education.

We had a Pennsylvanian exchange student in my high school class here in the Netherlands back in 1995 or so. We were 14-15. She was 17, almost 18. She couldn't keep up with us. And that wasn't because of the language barrier. Just missing a LOT of elementary/basic/common knowledge.
Level-wise, she would've been placed 1 or 2 years lower but the age gap would have been too big. She was cool about all of that though. It was a fun time. Hi Lindsay!

In addition to high levels of English being understood in the Netherlands, it is also true that this show is specifically geared towards a highly educated, young and progressive/liberal audience. It's basically our version of The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight with John Olive. So, their specific audience is most likely to understand a segment like this.
This is an Internet clip, I think. When it aired on TV, a segment like this would probably have Dutch subtitles.

I couldn't pass pass "middle school" without 2 foreign langues and to some "high school" path would require a third.
Today second foreign language start right at the beginning of "middle school"

I did write middle school, I meant elementary school. Its in grade 3 the start learning english and then in grade 5 they learn either German or french.
