Easy: The ones who get paid the most/biggest stars get "Top Billing" so are 1st (left to right) & are also center for the pictures.

Considering that billing order is from left to right and the poster almost always has the lead actor front and center, it's not what they do

you read left to right, but your eye is drawn to the center of the picture, so they put the big names in those spots... but I hate it too...
