Orange Roughy Fact

The orange roughy is generally considered a "trash fish" because they are/were scooped up en masse which is why you can buy some for cheap and eat it as a diet food. What you might not know about these cheap fillets is that they can live to be 150+ years old which is extraordinary for a fish. This fact was actually unknown when they became a fish that started being commercially fished which devastated the population due to their slow turn around rate. Recently, environmental and fishing organizations have helped set limits on the amount of them fished up to keep the odd fish from becoming endangered due to overfishing. Next time you see orange roughy on the shelf remember the fish you're eating could have been twice your age.
