Use tonic water instead of soda water if you want to add bitter notes to compensate for cutting out alcohol

#3 I gotta ask, did they change the recipe to the sparkling white recently? I love this stuff, but last two I bought just tasted kinda bad.

I made hot mulled cider for the first time this past thanksgiving, so delicious!! And pretty easy to make

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Boozy me would have disagreed, but I have learned that mocktails are important.

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

strong preparations of ginger and/or cinnamon have a burning mouth feel and superficial warming effect reminiscent of alcohol

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sparkling water with a splash of juice for me!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just had a Pineapple Nojito on Friday. Was alright. Had a floral aftertaste near the end.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mmm, mohito

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No alcohol, but you do have to kill a couple of mice for your Mule.

4 years ago | Likes 188 Dislikes 2

I have to ask: ginger beer + soda water + ginger syrup + lime juice… Isn’t that just ginger beer + lime juice?

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Hahaha. Yes, but the mice don't like theirs premixed

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This just makes me miss the fuck out of alcohol. :(

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can’t believe Cider is non alchoholc (Drink 2) yet I drank 8 cans of the stuff last night and heads banging. I should of stuck to alcohol!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cider has alcohol in it....

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you obiously did not get the sarcasm @Padawin

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a sober person, I enjoy having a festive drink on occasion. These all sound great!

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

These are just cocktails with fewer steps!!! ...Well done

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's a soda water? It mentions it in every recipe

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Carbonated plain water

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Carbonated water. Literally just bubbly water.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am going to put these to good use this holiday season! Thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Please remember if someone declines an alcoholic drink, don't ask why, just offer something non-alcoholic.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Talos on a cracker this! Someone offered me a beer, I declined. It was early on in my recovery and then I had to out myself as abstaining.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also if you haven't had an NA beer in a few years, they have come a long way. Especially if you like stouts or IPA's.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Absolutely. I like one called Partake. They make a real nice IPA.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had their stout and enjoyed it. I'm intrigued by the peach gose too. I'll keep an eye out for their IPA-thanks!

“Frozen blue berries, thawed…”. So, just blue berries?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I assume the fornation of ice crystaks ruptures the cells and releases juices, but then u could just crush them

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is so helpful thank you! I'm preggers and was looking for more fun non-alcoholic options.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My pregnant wife thanks you

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Hey my Muslim friends will love this, thanks for sharing!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hand on heart, mocktails got me through the worst of my withdrawal symptoms. 2 years, 27 days sober and counting.

I both love and hate that he made Lagavulin super popular. I used to be able to grab it for $20.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same- some people say they are triggers, but that was not the case with me either. Fancy fun drinks are like fancy fun food.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Advice for someone who is too lazy for cocktails and drinks straight alcohol? Best "shot" I've found so far are the immune support shots.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I liked shots too. I did best by avoiding drinks and mixers of anything I’d enjoyed at a bar, and just had iced tea, and an occasional 1/

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Pepsi or Coke with meals. But iced tea, Gatorade and water became my best friends. You’ll find what your comfort levels are. 2/2

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same! How I did it is I slowly added less and less alcohol until it was just a mocktail !

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I made strong flavored mocktails, the kind designed to hide the alcohol taste. It scratched the itch without 'opening the wound', as it were

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was just telling my GF that The only thing I miss about drinking was all the fun drinks. Gotta try these.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

When I was pregnant I started just throwing Christmas spices into gently heated apple or orange juices. Make hydration fun with vitamins.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Woah we are sober around the same time!

4 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Me too! Congrats!

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Sober part what what

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 years 44 days for me. Congratulations!

Wuddup, Ronaldo?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So the mice in the Moscow mule… thawed? Frozen? Also: what do I use in stead of mice for a vegan version ?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sam Vimes approves.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I just want the NA cucumber drink because it sounds delicious m

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yay! faux-itos!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My favorite sugar free mocktail, the Paloma: Small drizzle of Torani sugar free pomegranate over ice, half Fresca/seltzer, squeeze of lime.

Is cider something other than alcohol in the USA?

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

This thread explains to me for the first time why some Brits imagine cider is non-alcoholic, when in the UK it is always alcoholic.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We call the non-alcoholic stuff “apple juice“

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Difference and why the US calls it different than the rest of the world is explained here: https://youtu.be/-R41YFcX8e4

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cider is non-alcoholic. When its alcoholic we call it hard cider

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Yes, it's a type of apple juice essentially.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Cider in the US is an unfiltered, unfermented apple juice. Hard Cider is that juice, fermented.

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Then jack is cider frozen then with the ice removed from the top to increase the alcohol content.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have no idea what you mean. I picked up this deep freezer for storing potstickers! :D

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wondered the same!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought that

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For those wondering, Tiny Octopus points out that simple syrup is a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water, heated until sugar dissolves, then cooled.

4 years ago | Likes 606 Dislikes 22

It's also just a bland sweetener. Use raw sugar and bring some excitement to your palate. Slightly watered down honey also does the trick.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Chefsoda would add that there's no reason to heat the mixture & doing so muddies its taste. Just combine & shake a few times over an hour

4 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

EvilAbedsBoneSaw suggests mixing it up a bit by using brown sugar or coconut sugar in your simple syrup for fancier mocktail versions.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

We called that shit "demerara syrup" on the menu and really just confused customers... But it does make a better Old Fashioned, IMO.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was always funny when guests would ask if we made our bar's Simple in house. "Yes sir, I stirred the sugar water myself."

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Blightsteel101 advises that you want a 1:1 ratio by weight rather than by volume. This guarantees a syrup of 50 Brix.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Sounds pretty simple

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also feel free to change up sugar types for them, I like to use cane sugar (the brown one).

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This can be done on demand in the microwave! Was a game changer when I learned that.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Korndogg points out that a thicker 2-1 rich simple syrup keeps for much longer in the fridge and is only ~1.3 times as sweet.

4 years ago | Likes 152 Dislikes 3

Someone watches How To Drink. ;)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And is superior in every form for flavor.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's double the sugar but 66% (2:1 ratio) is about 130% more than 50% (1:1 ratio) so yes 1.3x sweeter. Math is funny.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

130% OF 50% *

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait, it goes bad?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sugar does go bad, if you don't keep it in the right conditions. Water does too, once you start adding stuff to it.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It'll actually grow mold of kept long enough, so just make smaller batches!

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I got a store bought, will vheck label, ty!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Chefsoda notes that strong syrup will keep longer & is only slightly sweeter, but is much thicker & changes the mouth feel of cocktails

4 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 1

An I'm here to point out that not following the directions makes my username.

4 years ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 0

Not-a-bartender-but-a-cook notes that a thicker syrup means you don't have to use as much in a drink, and can water it down less doing so.

4 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

That's true & actually a problem, as the drink recipes require the correct amount of water for balance. Reducing it makes a stronger drink,

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

but a less pleasing one. Like any flavor profile, it's balance. The greater volume also makes it easier to measure, much like kosher salt.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

(Also notes that if you supersaturate it too badly, the sugar will fall out of solution and you'll have to reheat it with more water.)

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Ahh, but if you use 75% as much and then add 25% water, it will keep in the fridge but have the same mouth feel. For example: if a recipe

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Right, but now you've made something standard, simple & quick, into a careful, multi step process. Simple syrup takes minutes to make &

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

easily lasts a week in the fridge. Any extra steps aren't warranted for something so quick.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Called for 1oz simple, heavy simple in a 2:1 ratio will be 0.5oz sugar and 0.25 water, then you just add the last 0.25oz water when building

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The drink if you start with 0.75oz of the heavy simple. I formatted that weird, sorry. But I'm pretty sure the math checks out
