As a non American journalist following US politics for 25+ years, it's been obvious to me and many of my colleagues that building a police state has been a bipartisan project since at least Bush Sr. The GOP have been more aggressively escalating the process but every pres since has done their share of it. It's been a frightening development not the least because most US policies eventually appear (to some extent) in your entire sphere of influence, which ofc includes the EU.

What is happening right now is absolutely the culmination of a fascist takeover of your country. Please bear in mind that is something the US only used to do to OTHER countries, notably Iraq, Iran, Indonesia and most of Central and South America. So, a large portion of the world really. European govts (with the exception of the UK) would offer up half hearted protests about it, but deep down they were ok with turning the countries of brown people into dictatorships. Bit of a colonial tradition.

But now the oppression is pretty much everywhere. I'm Swedish and my country used to be considered one of the most democratic in the world. Today, Sweden is controlled by a right wing coalition, the largest party of which used to be ("used to be") neo nazis 30 years ago. The social welfare system that took three generations to build and used to be Sweden's claim to fame is all but gone. Homeless in the streets, huge class differences etc.

Fascism takes slightly different form in different societies. But in the end it always boils down to low grade warfare on certain minorities, persecution of political dissidents and the free press and an authoritarian rule for everyone. And it is ALWAYS an ideological front for the wealthy elite. Historically, the only solution is based in solidarity. Reaching out across various groups in society. Various ethnic groups, workers, intellectuals, students, feminists, hbtq etc.

Very well said. Besides solidarity, a historically sound solution to fascist/plutocratic/etc. 'government' is full civil revolt of the bloodiest kind, so I just want to put that one on the table. But yes, solidarity is an important ingredient to that.

As long as society remains divided, the authoritarian govt and their capitalist owners control the situation. And this can go on for a very long time, a generation or more. So, bottom line, if you in the States - and the rest of us, too - want to live in democratic societies, we need to educate ourselves (study history), organize and then join with other groups, even those we might feel distanced from. It's either that or continuous brutal oppression for us, our kids and perhaps their kids, too.
