How Bulgaria Saved Their Jews

Now to start things off During WW2 Bulgaria was allied with the Axis powers. This is mainly because during WW1 Bulgaria had allied with Germany so they could fight the Allies with the hopes of annexing lost land from the Second Balkan war (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Balkan_War). Also Germany wanted to pass through Bulgaria and invade Greece, Bulgaria did not want to go to war so they allied with Germany so they could pass through.

This was our Tzar at the time. Tzar Boris III. Tzar Boris III did not listen to Hitler's demands of handing over the Bulgarian Jews. This put Bulgaria in bad relations with Germany, but if it weren't for the fact that Germany was really busy fighting on two fronts they might have actually invaded Bulgaria. But the Tzar did plan to deport all the Jews to Germany. So you may ask how the Jews were saved. It was actually the Eastern Orthodox Church. They argued that it would be wrong to hand over Bulgarian citizens to work in Hitlers camps and that this would be considered treason. Nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews were saved because all Bulgarians protested and Tzar Boris recognized this. After WW2 the Bulgarian Jewish population had decreased massively as Jews were moving to Israel because of the change that the Soviets were implementing in Bulgaria.
