Back in the 00's Arizona had a referendum on the ballot as to whether or not to allow payday loans companies to keep operating in the state with usurious rates. A regular ad on the radio at the time bragged about how voting yes would "send a strong message to the payday loan industry that they have to abide by the rules!"
Except voting no meant blocking them outright. The ad was literally placed by the industry to try and muddy the waters around the referendum.
I think about this every time I read someone talking about how bad AI is, then farting out, "but it's how things are now, have to use it, can't stop it".
notreallyaclevername
I mean, I do believe that AI is a technology that will dominate the future, but not this current "AI" where is basically just Smarterchild with access to Reddit that destroys the environment.
It is one of those inventions that could, if developed further, make life better for millions if not billions. But the issue is that, in capitalism, the tech companies have to turn higher and higher profits to account for the r&d spending, so it has become an exploitative nightmare.
kbryant414
I just attended a full-day meeting about using AI at work. Completely non-productive because it was the higher-up trying to sell everyone on how AI is great and AI is inevitable. They capped off the session by pulling up a randomly-selected recording of our AI servicing a customer call. The agent couldn't identify the issue, quoted the customer a large technician fee that doesn't exist, and when the customer asked to 'end the call,' replied with, 'okay, I'm transferring you to [wrong dept].'
MorkandGork
The problem isn't AI but how we use it. A lot of corporations think that they can use AI to replace people.. they cannot.. but they CAN help make their people's work easier and more efficient. I do use AI almost on a daily basis and I do see some benefits to it... will it relace actual people? I very much doubt it.. at least not for long or at least not for a very very long time still.. but if I can help create a slide deck that would take me a day or two in 10 minutes then I am all for it
ObjectivePragmatistWithHope
The "Trillions Invested/AI Revolution," is ENTIRELY based on SPECULATION! This is identacle to the late oughts "US Housing Market Bubble Crash," ie., the "Global Economic Crisis," but at least that left behind houses & properties. All this Speculation is based on empty projections & promises, with the AI FAIL rate (far beyond possible human error levels) on a Geometric curve up. The only things this will leave behind is broken companies, massive 'unemployment, & a totally FUCKED Economy. -_-
psyord
We've had AI like 100 years. The LLM is a breakthru in AI dev. LLM's will stay and there will be some new form of AI eventually. It's useful to separate the tech and the business around it to different problems.
Saying AI is bad is vague, you mean it's going to doom us or tech is lacking? I would agree the tech is lacking. LLM can do impressive things but fall short when there is little bit nuance. It's 3 year old that is really skilled, but just doesn't understand. Trusting LLM is a mistake.
itrytoonlysaypositivethings
Just because I have to use AI for work, and I've found uses for it privately, doesn't mean I'm a shill. I can spend hours combing through poorly written documentation or .. I could just ask AI.
I'm noticing there is a gap forming between those who staunchly refuse AI, and seem keen to misrepresent how it works, and the rest of us who begrudgingly incorporate it.
Navrodel
Yeah, no, not everything is a conspiracy.
At this point I'm just watching half of my industry lobotomize themselves by doing everything mundane with their stacks of "agents"
Meanwhile more and more people are turning to their bot of choice the way I used to wish they'd turn to Google when something confused them. Average idiots are absolutely getting addicted to having a sycophant in their pocket, and I don't think those junkies will give that up quietly. >
Navrodel
> I'm not saying anyone *should* use it. I've gone to lengths to tear it out of everything that it's wormed its way into, and will continue to do so.
What I *am* saying is that between the powerful vested interests and the growing public addiction to it, I'm fairly sure that we're not going to be rid of it as a society until its actually intelligent replacement comes along, no matter how long that takes.
It's like predicting Trump would come back: I didn't want it, but it was still inevitable.

AI is the techbro's attempt to become the masters of humanity via overblowing the value of it. This thing about it taking everyone's jobs is mostly bs. The most useful I've found it is for giving good APA and MLA citations for papers I write.
ezmicken
you've been using it for a lot longer than you think and just because someone does something evil with it doesn't make it evil. you can't stop the evolution of technology any more than you can stop the evolution of life but you can stop giving power over it to the rich.
Dajova
I'm indifferent of AI in general, it's the higher ups that continues to weaponize it. It should've never been more than a tool for some specialized tasks, but they make it out like nothing is more important that it. That's the problem.
FluidExchangeProgram
Too many imgurians are happy to upvote AI if it tells them what they want to hear.
Jarjarthejedi
Admittedly, a LOT of upvotes (especially the suspicious "within 5s of the post reaching the gallery with no comments" spam upvotes) are bots themselves. So it's not /all/ that (but it is way too much of that. Same goes for the upvotes on the posts that are just screenshots of headlines.)
scrumbles666
Redirecting the conversation from corporate malfeasance to individuals failing to be perfect consumers. This is a popular neoliberal tactic whereby you sell a false impression of consumer choice as the ultimate ethical determinate in order to free corporations from any accountability for their behavior.

raitchison
That's not been my experience, I've seen MANY posts in usersub die by downvotes, even though the subject matter would normally be popular here, just because of an unsubstantiated allegation that AI was used.
The only examples I can think of where obvious AI content did well was the posts mocking the (almost certainly AI generated) Mitch McConnell "proof of life" video, and the Lego videos the Iranians were posting mocking Trump and the U.S..
ipointoutnahtzeesbyreplyingtothem
FluidOnHisBrain is a closet conservative and this is just dogwhistle whining about how Imgur is a liberal echo chamber, it has nothing to do with the post at all.

Hate to tell you, but despite a lot of it being hype, it is truly inevitable. What most people misunderstand is that “inevitable” doesn’t mean AI will be good at everything or replace all the jobs overnight, rather AI will start to creep into almost every corner of your life in some way when you know it, or want it. Try to fight it all you want, but you will lose that fight.
poochyena
"inevitable" implies it will happen in the future but hundreds of millions of people are already using it regularly. We're already there.

I had the same thought. I don't think it's inevitable because I secretly think it's good. I think it's inevitable because it's here and there is not a meaningful chance that it will be regulated to extinction. In order to kill off tech like this, you would need sweeping regulations on it across at LEAST the US, EU, and Asia, but to make it a more reliable death sentence you need to include the whole of NA and SA.
Also, the reasoning they use in the body of the post is... Something lol. I 1/2
Badprenup
Don't know how they conflated lobby groups putting out deceptive political ads (which happens for basically every ballot measure in every state) with the idea that "anyone who says AI is real or inevitable and says they are against it are actually secret supporters of AI".
That is a brain-meltingly stupid take.
MorkandGork
well... I dont think anyone would claim it is not Real.. as for scary.. that all depends on how we end up using it.

That isn't in itself bad advise. It is no different than saying 20 years ago that everyone should have basic internet literacy. Or know how to use Excel. As someone working in a corporate environment we do have to deal with AI at every level. And by itself it isn't a bad thing. AI CAN be a powerful tool and make your life easier but you do need to know how to use it properly

RobertAG25772
It will, but AI per se is here to say. We need to figure out how to regulate it.
raitchison
So am I because I want to buy a new PC and not get raped in the process.
But when the bubble bursts, and it will, it doesn't mean that AI or even "AI Slop" is going away. Best we can hope for is the more toxic entities (like OpenAI) to fail, though sadly it's more likely that the less toxic entities will.
When the .com bubble burst it didn't mean the Internet stopped being a thing or even significantly slowed it's adoption.
RobertAG25772
We shouldn’t hope for AI in & of itself to fail, but for a consensus to arise for it to be regulated, just like conventional media.
IMakeLotsOfReferencesAndRemakes
The problem is that the internet actually had a wide scale use on almost every level of society... "AI" just doesn't. In fact its actively harmful in so many ways. Hallucinating information, executing commands it was told not to, energy use, land use, water use, the reinforcement of people's biases and the total lack of real research and verification... No one really wants this. We had better tools that did almost everything "AI" does. There are narrow bands of space where this tech is useful.
MorkandGork
The internet was exactly the same 25 years ago. AI will also eventually have a wide scale use across all levels of society if it does not already. Certainly most corporations use it
scrumbles666
Also a huge part of the .com bubble was the investment in infrastructure for it, not just bad websites. Telecom companies thought the demand for internet was exponential rather than just growing, and way over-built their fiber-optic networks. By comparison, AI doesn't have enough demand for it's existing infrastructure; the data center frenzy is entirely speculative, and a bunch of CPUs in a warehouse aren't as versatile as fiber-optic cable lines down every street.

"This isn't a bubble because the industry is spending a shitton of money on it" seems like a pretty goddamn stupid take.
bippityboppitybuttsex
It is an intentional misunderstanding of the Capital Cycle... and seeing the same thing repeat, over and over and over again and the idiots are screaming, 'this time it's different!'
RawSuger
basically the opposite of what he says?
RawSuger
the AI bubble is certainly real altho we dont kow how it will play out, there still might be winners - that doesnt mean AI wont fundamentally change society. they ar just overinvesting before the tech is likely to mature
bippityboppitybuttsex
Right, that is the point.
Bubbles don't mean the tech is invalid or useless, it means the early players pouring money into it are the most likely to lose.
I like the example of internet search or portable MP3 players... Google was not first to market, or even 20th... Apple wasn't first to market with an MP3 player, it was extremely late, but they were there to learn from the idiots and pick up the pieces.
Xenarion
Yeah, the AI bubble is real but not as encompassing as some people might believe. Many companies that got sold a dream of cost-cutting via AI are turning back, and many AI companies will fold, but the best ones will continue and AI will fundamentally change many things in our society and some industries. Even when the "bubble" burst, AI and even Gen AI won't go away.
salunatics
Hard take: it is inevitable, it's already here and not going away. How we will USE it is not inevitable. Is it overhyped, an economic bubble waiting to burst, and a pox on the environment? Yes. Are the "AI" tools released by the browser companies going to go away No. Like any other new tool there will be a learning curve (cancer detection-good; meme generator - bad). All we can do now is slow, tax, and regulate the growth to give ourselves time to figure out where the best benefit is.
scrumbles666
This is like saying an AOL disk in every mailbox is means AOL is inevitable. LLMs have no practical use, and only get most of the use they are getting because the cost is being heavily, heavily subsidized.
CP3oh
How do you tax something that only loses massive amount of money and is only kinda useful for some things sometimes?
salunatics
You obviously weren't in the professional tech world during the .com bubble burst.. Experience and economic history is my response .
CP3oh
So video cards don't rapidly degrade and have to be replaced every 18 months to maybe 2 years? Does "dark fiber" have to pulled up and replaced that frequently?
ipointoutnahtzeesbyreplyingtothem
Yes, perfect, exactly what the post is about. "We can't do things we always did without AI slop before because uhhhhhhhhhhhh AI is da futur!"
poochyena
Why are you sending an electronic message and not sending a letter? Thats how we did it in the past.
Cognit0Hazard
I mean you're calling everyone that disagrees with you a liar. I've had suicidal thoughts over generative AI because I'm a small time professional artist. I don't like that it's a plagiarism machine. I don't think it's going away either. I hope the bubble bursts, but I don't think it'll just disappear after that.
sirbartonslady
I hate it, I don't trust it, and I avoid it as much as humanly possible. I do NOT use it knowingly. I don't know when I am being forced to use it without knowing, of course, but I will never use it willingly or knowingly. I want it to disappear the same way crypto faded into the woodwork

dude this place is infested with ai slop, it's time to face the facts. we actually don't downvote ai on imgur. too stupid to recognize it and too lazy to care. for the record, i do actually downvote ai, it's just that imgur as a whole sure as fuck doesn't.
theguythatisme
Hey that’s not how we grind out upvotes. Imgur is so far up its own ass with the “we down vote ai on Imgur” thing it’s becoming a parody of itself. You don’t downvote AI, you upvote to virtue signal how great you all are. It’s a circle jerk.
ipointoutnahtzeesbyreplyingtothem
"This model is too dangerous, we can't release it!" *sells it to every single corporate buyer*
raitchison
Because if they released it to everyone then bad guys would use it to find and exploit vulnerabilities in software and systems. Letting the businesses and organizations (like the non-profit Mozilla or Linux foundations) use it to find and fix those vulnerabilities first is a VERY different scenario.
https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/dispatches/new-ai-models-are-pushing-open-source-security-to-its-limits-their-developers-must-step-up/

ipointoutnahtzeesbyreplyingtothem
I'm not the one puffing up AI, my dude.
RobertAG25772
AI IS “inevitable” but we can regulate it—if we choose to. The most important thing is for us not to act like machines ourselves by blindly trusting its output. AI knows how to collate data & make inductions, but it’s not so good at critical & creative thinking and moralization with respect to judging the reliability of data. It just regurgitates our own ideas w/o evaluating it. In a way, we have to guard against OVERESTIMATING (the reliability of) AI!
Xenarion
This. It's a natural progression of IT, but like most facets of IT, it can and should be regulated.
scrumbles666
The machine learning on small datasets they're using for shit like cancer screening probably is. But everything else very much isn't. LLMs have not been shown to do anything that can't be done cheaper and/or more reliably by a human being. They current spread is entirely hype propped up by delusional rich people with gambling addictions who can't accept that they all made the same bad bet.
LoquaciousDude
ChatGPT made novel solutions to math problems, massively helped by a new system that allows it to properly check its own work. Actual scientists have used the LLMs outputs in papers. LLMs also seem to be a big help in science in general, not because they generate reliable output, but because they can parse a shit ton of data and present the results. You're looking for a solution? It can parse hundres or thousands of scientific papers, and see if any of them have what you are looking for. Those >
LoquaciousDude
papers dont necessarily label it how you would otherwise search, or even put focus on the specific thing you need. Doing that with human, takes so much more time that even the LLM's tendency to hallucinate doesnt make it less reliable. You spend an hour verifying its output vs 15 hours searching for the things its outputting from. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ8KThKAfbs - I wont pretend to know the complete ins and outs of it, its what I got from this guy who does math videos.
Xenarion
No, not really. I work in IT and AI has been a thing for the past decade, at least. Google's search engine is AI. Youtube's algorithm is AI. Facebook's profiling is AI. Insurance companies use AI to calculate risk and premium. Most machine translation is done via AI.
The only thing is that there recently was a breakthrough in generative AI that made it more obvious to the public.
valen00
eehhhh LLMs being actually functional is a pretty big step change really. Underselling the impact feels kinda like people saying jacquard looms won't replace traditional fabric makers. Is (the current) AI going to do all the things people selling it say? no. Will it make a large impact? yes.
Xenarion
Yeah, I agree on the impact. I was replying to OP saying people who say it's real/inevitable/scary are trying to sell it. No, I'm not trying to sell anything, just observations on the reality I've seen in the industry.
ipointoutnahtzeesbyreplyingtothem
Yes, that is the marketing behind it: "It's inevitable, you have to accept it." Nothing but marketing, but suckers keep falling for it.
Xenarion
lol, that's in line with saying "automobiles are just a fad, horses are there to stay."
ipointoutnahtzeesbyreplyingtothem
Cars are actually useful. Call me a luddite next, really put your ignorance on full view.
You guys don't have to keep regurgitating the same failed arguments every time, you know?
raitchison
Lots of people say they don't like AI, yet AI usage continues to increase.
https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2026/06/17/americans-and-ai-2026-chatbots-smart-devices-and-views-on-impact/
Even if you hate the overall impact that AI has had on society, you can't honestly argue that there aren't unambiguously good uses for these tools. Reading medical imaging scans is the most obvious one, helping to improve software security is another.
scrumbles666
Because it's filling in for existing things like search engines and dictation programs after being forced on people. Also it can't be ignored that the growth is built entirely on the subsidization of compute expense by AI companies (so venture capital) themselves. AI usage numbers are vapor until people are actually paying the real cost to use it.
vilikke
Every Google-search now triggers AI-search as well, so those numbers are not necessarily "real"
ipointoutnahtzeesbyreplyingtothem
You guys have been trotting out ML in medical imaging based on select private datasets to try and pretend it's the same as agentic slop and vibe coding for years now, and it's no more true now than it was the first time you told that lie. Fuck off.
poochyena
Raitchison specifically pointed out the differences between different types of AI. You did not. You, logically, are the one suggesting they are all the same.
scrumbles666
They literally don't. They posted a study that only looks at LLMs and then provided some use cases, one of which could be assumed to be a different type, but it's not explicitly stated and so doesn't rule out just asking Claude.
raitchison
Strawman harder, I never said that medical imaging was the same as "slop".
All I said was that there were some unambiguously good uses for these tools, which is a fact. You're the one that's pretending all things "AI" are the same.
Or if you ever end up needing a cancer screening are you going to tell the doctors to make sure to not use any of that evil AI to read your scan results?
ipointoutnahtzeesbyreplyingtothem
lmfao yeah you go right ahead and ask Clippy the autocomplete to do that for you, you dumb fuck. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2847679
valen00
do... do you not know the difference between a LLM and what the guy posted about?
