I'm a prof at a small-ish uni. I actually get jealous of the security elementary schools have. Our admins don't give a shit. All the outside doors are unlocked at all times, there's only one exit from our entire office area (also a huge fire hazard). Just know you're not alone even in higher ed

This must be a very stressful thing to think about. Hopefully this might ease your thoughts a little bit, but if you're kind to your kids there is a higher likelihood they'll spare you, like how kids spare other kids who are kind to them. This doesn't count kids who don't know you though of course. I'm sure it'll cut the percentage chance down significantly though.

My wife is a HS teacher, and they've had several scares over the years. These never made headlines because either it was just a scare or they isolated the person before they could hurt anyone. The fact that the school is in an affluent zone and didn't want it's reputation damaged probably counts too.

I'm not a teacher, but if I was as underappreciated as you all are I would learn another language and try to get a job in a foreign country. Of course there's gonna be culture shock, homesickness and a whole new set of stresses to deal with, but when you settle in and develop a routine I bet you a life you never thought possible will open up.

Until last year, I was teaching in a classroom with a glass wall opening to the one hallway and contained the only door. The one corner that could hide folks could contain 2 bodies from sight. My classroom was full of sitting ducks should the worst happen.
But the door could lock upon closing.
Huzzah! to the architect hired in 2015 to design that classroom setting.

I'm a teacher in Florida. I've taught everything from pre-K up to high school. Teachers here are not OK and have not been OK for a long time. This timeline sucks.

I personally know two teachers that were targeted. The districts conservative board members are using private investigators to target teachers and report “anonymously” as concerned parents. During any investigation, teachers are removed from class and tied up in investigation for months. Sometimes the entire length of the school year. Then, they just rinse and repeat - or just cancel their contracts unless they fit their values.

I have a daughter in middle school and another in elementary school. Every time I hear there is a shooting I have a tiny heart attack. It's great! It's like the lottery, except with my kid's lives.

I'm a teacher, so i think about safety often. This one hit close to home. One of the teachers at the school used to babysit my kids. She's safe, but still, just experiencing this will stay with her.

the biggest issue is the systemic issues that causes these problems. Particularly lack of care by alot of schools, school staff and other figures. Often due to schools being understaffed, or adminstrators who dont want to tarnish their schools image. Kids who are bullied, kids with emotional or even mental stability issues are often brushed off, pushed aside, or bullied worse if they tell a teacher. leading many to believe their only option is to take matters into their own hands

Im not specifically blaming schools, Im blaming society as a whole, at least as far as America is concerned, There was a time when guns were second nature to most americans, every house had them, people had gun racks in their trucks, had shooting sports in schools. They used to sell guns in sears catalogues as christmas gifts for kids. Mass shootings were rare or unheard of. Somethings changed, its not the guns, nor access to guns, its something deeper within society

You're right to worry. My parent was a teacher for 30 years. Glad she got out when she did. It's really not good out there dude. Do what you can to take care of yourself and your own. I know you are probably the kind of person who can't help but take care of the kids too, so go for it. Just make sure you also take care of yourself too.

A ton of guns stolen from local shop and a ton of shootings all weekend and come early Monday morning a kid wound up dead outside a home next to an elementary school, the shots may have been from the school before hours, at dawn - as the crime was investigated the school was on lock and teach mode. It is a lot .. grateful that at the school my kid goes to they take it seriously if I got a concern or question about things and they rather we say something then ignore it.

I'm a teacher. A kid brought a gun to school 2 months ago. He brought it to show off not to do anything bad as far as we know but the kid got caught with it right before he would have been in my class the following period. To know he didn't plan to use it but knowing how close I came to a firearm in my classroom still fucks with my head. I love this job but it scares me sometimes.

I work in a middle school in America, doing many things such as lunch and rec, bussing, front desk, and recently got promoted to the Emergency Response Team.
This means I get the privilege of making sure doors are secure and people are sheltered during a Lock Down. No shelter in place for me apprently. Back when we started doing shooter drills the front desk people were told "You'd be killed first, so don't try to run. Warn people instead (pointing at fire alarm pull)." So yeah, it sucks

I’m a teacher and I can tell you, that would be the biggest mistake of her career. She can’t take it on to campus with her. At best, she would be able to leave it in her car as long as it’s out of sight.
What is she going to do? Abandon a bunch of 3rd graders to run to her car and grab her gun to then run back in to the building?
We need a nation wide teacher walk out is what we need.

In a lot of American schools the states have made the teachers carrying legal, and they encourage teachers to be armed to “protect their classes.” This puts the burden of protecting children on the schools and individual teachers instead of the police. If children die and the teacher wasn’t armed it’s the teachers fault for not being armed. If the teacher failed to save a life of a student oven though armed it’s that teachers fault for not being a fast enough or good enough shot.

So sadly it is becoming a very big choice as a teacher do you pack heat on the job. And frankly yes that means that as a parent you better get used to the fact that the authority who is enforcing rules on your kids is holding a gun that your kid knows is probably loaded. And that is supposed to make your kid feel safe. Have fun knowing that your kids teacher may be soon enforcing classroom rules while being just as armed as the same pigs that will shoot your kid if they say the wrong thing.

I teach and live in one of the reddest states in the country and we are only allowed to carry on campus if very very very specific conditions are met.
No state in the country just allows teachers to carry if they want.
