I don't like spiders, and that includes jumping spiders. I understand that most people think they're cute, but I just can't. Is it the fur? The mannerisms? I don't get it. In my mind, they're still identical to all other spiders. Seeing as how I'll get downvoted for sharing my thoughts on the matter, I should note that I always attempt to catch and release spiders, when possible. I still respect life, but my arachnophobia is very prominent.

It's the large beady eyes, it's triggering a lot of people's neural signals that fire off when they see newborns. It's fascinating once you find out how that part of our brain works.

That makes sense. Thanks! I will admit, they're definitely the cutest spiders, but it's still not enough for me, lol. I do enjoy seeing pictures and videos of spiders, because like all animals, I think they're fascinating, it's just that my irrational fear takes over when they're in the same space as me. Luckily, I have two cats who almost always spot spiders well before I ever would, and they don't even try to eat them/kill them, they just more or less try to play with them. 😄

so they’ve actually done studies on cortisol levels (stress hormones) of spider being held by strangers vs their regular keepers and there is a distinct difference. they do recognize people and bond with them. not like a cat or a dog by any means but it’s something!

Always adored jumpers, and had an interest in T's. I now have an Aphonopelma seemanni (a Costa Rica zebra named Legs For Days/"Legs), and just recently aquired my first Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens sling (a greenbottle blue named Ichorus as a pun).
Legs is a super sensitive girl that just wants to not be noticed and chill. Loves food, hates tank cleaning days.
Ichorus is named that partially as I got them on Halloween but also because they want to be close to the heat lamp too much lol

I get mine naturally living in a small meadow in some small woods. Mine are all "voluntary". I went from gently escorting them out to creating indoor "support" areas kinda like terrariums without lids or sides. Actually find fewer dead ones under furniture and window sills now and much fewer bugs. (Yes I handle them with zero sign of aggression ever).

How does one keep a jumping spider from running away from them? I don't understand how you can keep a pet so small and so fast. Are they trainable? Or do you typically just start with them super young? Food motivated? She's super cute

From what I've found, it's best to start when young. Jumpers that are hand-raised do best around people, but can't be released back to the wild as they're "domesticated"- they actually learn to be "feral" in the wild.
Wild ones have a hard time adapting to domestic settings. We have one that's a bit rare in our area for conservation. She was gravid and we wanted to save her from the cold too. She was super shy at first but a bit more "tame" now, though she'll always be "feral".

To explain a little more: jumpers actually learn like any wild animal. They go through a trial and error process and remember what was a bad experience and what was good, and keep that for life. Big moving thing=bad, and it's hard to prove otherwise.
Which is why hand-raised jumpers can't be released after being in captivity. They hunted, yes, but it's "safe" foods. They don't know what adversaries are, how to navigate, what prey is safe or not, and that big moving things are to be avoided.

Thank you, that's very helpful. Have you ever had one escape (either from habitat or from your hands)? How do you catch them again? I assume chasing could be dangerous for them, would you lure them back?

about 2.5-3 years. only downside of keeping jumpers is that they don’t live very long :(
