Archer did a whole episode about this. They repeatedly freaked out because someone lit a cigarette or something and went into a full blown panic while being reminded that its filled with helium, its not flammable. Its totally safe.

Helium existed back then and was used in US airships. The US had a monopoly on helium and wouldn't sell to Germany.
