They wrote some pretty good music for this scene. Kinda reminds me of the song Will Smith wrote for Wild Wild West.

I interpreted it as: He gets his powers from Asgard. Asgard is its people. Most, possibly all, of the Asgardians are gone, or broken.

But he again required a weapon to summon massive ass-kicking amounts of lightning, which contradicts this climactic scene of Ragnarok.
