Los Angeles Vault.
The official Vault Tec demonstration vault. Being fully functional, it housed several people during the great war. Years later when it finally opened, the inhabitants emerged into the Boneyard and scattered; thus forming the Adytum and The Regulators. It later became The Master's base of operations. (Fallout).
Unfinished Vault.
The unfinished vault has the exact same layout as Vault 13, and is also named Fake Vault 13 in-game. Not much to say about it, really - it's a cave with a sign in it. (Fallout 2).
Vault 0.
Vault 0 is a vault found in Fallout: Tactics, and the details about it might contradict official canon. Long story short; Vault 0 was a place for the greatest geniuses to be kept in cryogenic stasis - their brains were then extracted and hooked up to The Calculator, a massive super-computer designed to help humanity. Because of budgetary issues The Calculator was missing back-up systems. This corrupted the computer which then released hostile robots into the wasteland. (Fallout Tactics)
Vault 3.
Vault 3 was designed to stay closed for 20 years, but the inhabitants opted to keep it closed even longer. Eventually an issue with the water filtration system forced the inhabitants to venture outside. The inhabitants of the vault started to trade with outsiders, and everything was running smoothly - until they attracted the attention of the Fiends. They were slaughtered due to their lack of security measures - they had been the model of a functional society, the overseer wasn't a megalomaniac and they maintained order and democracy. (Fallout New Vegas)
Vault 8 / Vault City.
After receiving the all-clear signal, the inhabitants of Vault 8 ventured out and started a settlement which would later become Vault city. Quite possibly one of the best settlements in the wastes, fully equipped with a medical center and information hub. (Fallout 2)
Vault 11.
Vault 11 was a social experiment centering around sacrifice. Each year the inhabitants were instructed to sacrifice one of their own so that the others may live. Ironically, if the inhabitants refused, an automated message would commend them on their morality and tell them the vault is unlocked, and that they could come and go as they pleased. An audiolog can be found from the final survivors of the vault, upon learning the cosmically ironic premise. (Fallout New Vegas)
Vault 12.
Vault 12 wasn't as much a social experiment as it was a biological experiment; the door was designed not to close properly, letting the radiation flood the fault. This resulted in the inhabitants becoming nigh-immortal ghouls, and thus Necropolis was founded. (Fallout)
Vault 13.
Vault 13 was a control vault, wherein The Vault Dweller was born and raised. Due to a water issue, The Vault Dweller was forced to venture into the wasteland and retrieve a new water-chip. Upon returning, The Vault Dweller was exiled by the overseer who thought the adventurers return would persuade others to leave - thus ruining the point of the control group. The overseer was then executed. (Fallout, fallout 2)
Vault 15.
Vault 15 was a social experiment in which the inhabitants were individuals with wildly different ideologies and perspectives. The result was a social divide, in which 4 groups were formed; The Jackals, The Vipers, the Khans and the founders of Shady Sands. (Fallout, Fallout 2)
Vault 17.
The actual purpose of vault 17 remains a mystery, it's speculated that it was part of the control groups. The inhabitants of Vault 17 were forcibly taken and turned into supermutants by The Master's army. Lily Bowen is a confirmed inhabitant of Vault 17. (Fallout New Vegas - mention only)
Vault 19.
The inhabitants of this vault were separated into two groups; red and blue. After an unexpected sulfur-leak contaminates the air-supply, the vault was abandoned and overrun by fire geckos. (Fallout New Vegas)
Vault 21.
This vault only admitted individuals who were admitted gamblers, and these inhabitants were to settle their disputes and disagreements through games of skill and chance. This tradition was passed on from parent to child, until Robert House ordered for the inhabitants to surrender their vault and assimilate into the Strip. In a very risky bet, the inhabitants of the vault lost the lower levels of the vault to House, while the top levels became a hotel for people traveling through New Vegas. (Fallout New Vegas)
Vault 22.
A vault designed to study and experiment using fringe agricultural science, eventually resulting in the deadly spore creatures found in Big MT. and the vault itself. (Fallout New Vegas)
Vault 29.
No one admitted in this vault was above the age of 15. Parents of the inhabitants were strategically moved to different vaults. Harold the Tree is said to be an original inhabitant of Vault 29. (Fallout Bible, Van Buren)
Vault 34.
The armory of Vault 34 was grossly overstocked, and thus The Boomers emerged from the vault - headed for the Nellis Air force Base. Kaboom. (Fallout Bible, Fallout New Vegas)
Vault 43.
20 men.
12 women.
1 panther.
(Penny Arcade)
Vault 69.
This vault was designed to house a maximum of 1000 people. 999 women and 1 man. (Fallout Bible, Van Buren, Penny Arcade)
Vault 75.
As part of this experiment, every student in Malden Middle School and their families were admitted into the vault - after which the children were escorted into the atrium as the adults were executed. To refine and study human genetics, the inhabitants were subject to harsh training bordering on torture. They were told about Uptopland, the name they used for the wastes, were they would one day be strong enough to venture out and help people. By the time they turned 18, if the inhabitants were strong and intelligent enough, they would be harvested and killed - or admitted into the science staff. (Fallout 4)
Vault 76.
Vault 76, like many of the more uninteresting vaults, was a control group meant to recolonize the surface after nuclear war. (Fallout 3, Fallout 4)
Vault 77.
A social experiment in which one single man was admitted into a vault, only accompanied by sock-puppets. (Penny Arcade)
Vault 81.
This vault was designed to test diseases on the unknowing inhabitants - the living quarters were divided into one for the science staff and one for the inhabitants. The original overseer secretly tampered with the equipment designed to administer the diseases through the ventilation, saving the population of the vault. (Fallout 4)
Vault 87.
A testing and research facility for the Forced Evolutionary Virus. The test subjects were locked into airtight chambers and exposed to the FEV, where the scientists would observe the changes the test subjects would go through. After their infection, the subjects underwent physical and mental changes over a period of about two weeks. (Fallout 3)
Vault 88.
This vault was designed to test experimental Vault Tec technology before installing it in other vaults - it was never fully constructed until The Sole Survivor aided in expanding and modifying the vault to his/her liking. (Fallout 4)
Vault 92.
Vault 92 was inhabited largely by renowned musicians. The point of the experiment was to subject the inhabitants to white noise in order to implant violent psycho-hypnotic suggestions in their heads. (Fallout 3)
Vault 95.
The inhabitants of this vault was composed solely of drug addicts. The vault was focused on helping these addicts kick their habits, fully equipped with a seemingly painful detox machine. The staff was instructed to wait until progress was showing before unveiling a large stash of quality drugs. (Fallout 3 cut content, Fallout 4)
Vault 101.
The home of The Lone Wanderer. The point of this vault was to monitor the effects of a dictatorial overseer - unlike most of the vaults in the post-nuclear world, this one was never meant to be opened. (Fallout 3)
Vault 106.
All the inhabitants were admitted and accounted for, and so it was time to start the experiment; after 10 days psychoactive drugs were pumped through the air systems. By 2277 it is a broken mess filled with destroyed interior and insane inhabitants. (Fallout 3)
Vault 108.
This vault houses several inhabitants - all of whom are clones of one man; Gary. (Fallout 3)
Vault 111.
This vault was meant to be a research facility for cryogenic science. The inhabitants were frozen upon entering, and were unable to escape when the staff committed mutiny against the scientists. (Fallout 4)
Vault 112.
All the inhabitants were put in suspended animation much like the inhabitants of Vault 111 - however the dwellers in Vault 112 were subjected to virtual reality in which a sadistic doctor controlled every aspect of their lives. (Fallout 3)
Vault 114.
The inhabitants of Vault 114 were primarily upper-class citizens and affluent individuals - however the luxury aspect of the vault was grossly exaggerated as inhabitants were forced to use communal showers and share single-room apartments. A man only known as Soup Can Harry, who was presumably just a homeless man Vault Tec grabbed off the street, was given the position of grand overseer. (Fallout 4)
Vault 118.
Unlike most of the other vaults, the experiment of Vault 118 was never initialized as the housing for the less affluent inhabitants was abandoned before the great war. A former General Atomics scientists suggested they move the inhabitants brains into robobrains, which drove the overseer to suicide. (Fallout 4)
Thanks for reading!
If you have any suggestions for future lists feel free to tell me in the comments. @Derfoxeh.

Dwelling. Dwelling never changes.
PigeonCrack
You forgot vault 68 all men one woman
mrberg84
Thank you for this.
goldenspider666
Just a friendly reminder that when Bethesda bought fallout they retconned a lot of Fallout 1 & 2 and the entirety of Tactics
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
They did bits and pieces, but I don't think large portions. And wasn't Tactics already non-canon before Interplay went under?
azrielmoha
List of major and minor factions in the franchise, or list of Pre-war companies and their products
Kaeru34
You forgot vault 68 which is the polar opposite of 69, with 999 men and 1 woman
Murdox1221
Van Buren is not Cannon BTW...once Bethesda shut it down from black isles it was no longer considered cannon by the devs
ServantOfTheGodEmperorOfUsersub
Yeah van buren was pretty out there, too.
Favri
You had me at Vault Tec
samrock14
Ahhhh the vault stories.
OurLordandSaviorSkeletor
Vault 108 was more deeply in detail. I can't remember what but sometime after the close one man lost a bet or something and started cloning.
Varimothras
I just found a Vault-Tec lunch box for sale at my Gamestop. I'm tempted.
DidItForScience
I had never heard of the Penny-Arcade additions to Fallout Lore. Can I read all about them on their site?
itsnotwhoyouthinkitis
Too long to read, but I am sure if I did...I would like it +1

Vault 34: if it exists the IS porn in it
brln92
So is vault 69 open?
Janthomasz
This is awesome! Thank you op! +1
CaptCrobar
A lot of the information in this is wrong or lacking. If you want to know more go to http://fallout.gamepedia.com/Fallout_Wiki
PackardGoose
Now I want to play Fallout again
HardOfHearingLeopard
I've never understood how they determine which Vault has what number.
DeepBlueSneak
also, kinda, lower numbers in the west, higher numbers in the east
Actualdeadpool
Date started.
ColonelButtons
Severely disappointed in most of the vaults in Fallout 4
ServantOfTheGodEmperorOfUsersub
They were pretty ok. Interesting, but not as wild as in previous games. However, the institute makes vault tec look primitive.
ztoundaa
I am just sad each new version has less vaults. Uncovering them is my favorite part of the franchise.
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
I actually liked it that they went back to the more psychological fuckery sort of experiments, rather than just being wacky.
Hyero
I think you forgot the Vault under the hotel in the Bar Harbor DLC.
dyingpool88
No that's vault 118, it's included
Loliisforhugnotforfug
I'm adding this to my favorites, Fallout lore is my favorite
communityjewbox
Welp I'm going to play fallout
Imhereforcutestuff
Hehe, yeah, I just restarted fallout 2 for old time's sake. :)
GlobalStrike
Just got back into the whole series recently. Hell, I've even started playing 1 and 2, since the steam versions will seemingly work now.
ItsMeMello7
Could you do a list on the bad guys of fallout?
ServantOfTheGodEmperorOfUsersub
That's super debatable, especially in NV and 4.
ItsMeMello7
Well I mean like Deathclaws, Ghouls, Radroaches, etc etc
ServantOfTheGodEmperorOfUsersub
Those aren't bad guys... Those are just enemies. Mobs. I mean in the older FOs there were intelligent deathclaws (who weren't enemies).
GulcasaOfTheSnowfall
Do I side with the asshole militaristic technohoarders, the deluded robot right activists or the scientists with a broken moral compass? HMM
Killersmail
oh oh or the communistic dictatorship where you must do all the work and everyone always hate you.
alexcarrie
Why was Vault Tec doing all of these experiments?
gooseymaverick
The Fallout Wikia is full of lore and will explain VaultTec's connection to the Enclave: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vault-Tec_Corporation
Merasite
For science
Murdox1221
Google , project safe house. Basically it was originally legit, then the government (enclave) took over and started the experiments
Kilyrka
I believe there was also an alternate version of vault 69-999 men and 1 woman.
Wormbo2
So.... Saturday night out in the city?
vGHazard
Heyoh!!
Lunchbox007
That was Vault 68. Also in the Fallout Bible.
Murdox1221
Vault 68, as mentioned in the bible and penny arcade
Carnwennan
For some reason both of those vaults get to me. The slow, creeping fear you would get being the "1" in that scenario must be terrifying.
Carnwennan
Fun thought: Imagine the fate of the children of those individuals, especially a daughter from vault 68.
lukadisgre
Well I've got great news for you! The woman was raped to death and the man was turned into nothing more than a sex slave.
FuzzyX
Before she died she had a baby who had 999 fathers.

FuzzyX
It is in the social sense if no test to discover the true father when mama was a train that everyone rode on.
FuzzyX
It is in a post apocalyptic lawless world meaning group rule and what is best for the majority.

It truly was the best vault. I only wish you could befriend them and get an army of Gary followers.

Gary Gary Gary!

Gary, Gary, Gary, and Gary
furioustomato
Vaults 21 and 34 were the only known experimental vaults to thrive and not go to complete hell while sticking to Vault-Tec's experiments.
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
Vault 3 did alright until an outside force, that being the Fiends, interfered.
furioustomato
Vault 3 was a control vault, not a nightmarish experimental vault.
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
I'd say it wasn't as harmful as the other experiments, but the 20 year isolation and subsequent opening policy was the experiment.
furioustomato
Nope, it was a control vault. Opening after 20 years was not an experiment: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vault_3
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
Then why the different opening periods for the 'control' vaults? Seems like a crap control group if there's variations among them.
Redbrickadam
Would you really classify 34 as a thriving vault, it ended in civil war and got flooded with radiation.
furioustomato
Its inhabitants left and became the Boomers. It didn't end in a total catastrofuck.
Spawnsy
What about vault 81?
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
Vault 81 didn't stick to Vault-Tec's original plan though.
Spawnsy
I'd count still being functioning a success for them
BillyMaysHereWithOxiClean
Success for the inhabitants maybe, but not for Vault-Tec.
WalterSobchaksWorldOfPain
No! My wife fucking hates Fallout and I just finished 100+ hours of Fallout 4 last month. How dare you make me want to play more?!
Murdox1221
100 hours lol....almost up to 400 brother.
WalterSobchaksWorldOfPain
I knew some cunt was going to make fun of me for "not being hardcore enough." Turns out it is you.
TheGr8ness
Sounds like someone needs to take a trip to Vault 69...
Chrichelle
Have you played fallout shelter? It's fun too :p
WalterSobchaksWorldOfPain
I tried to get into it, but I didn't care for it. You constantly had to be playing - if you were away too long, everyone started dying.
Chrichelle
I've been doing a playthrough of it on my channel, it's been fun. :)
snoozywomble
I haven't had trouble with anyone dying yet but I do play it quite a lot
