So if their contention is that SNAP recipients should have restrictions on how to spend the taxpayer funded money they receive, then shouldn't all government employees have the same restrictions? Dumpf should have to give up his McD's since we are footing the bill! I don't think my tax money should go go boner pills for politicians either, nor should it go for anything remotely related to cosmetic surgery. In fact, I want a full accounting of what they spend their money on and full authority to reduce their pay to restrict them from purchasing anything I don't think they deserve. Isn't that what they want to do to SNAP recipients?
NonPoliticalChimpanzee
Thank God this didn't affect my billions

So fuck you if you are on SNAP and diabetic, then I guess.
No regulating your blood sugar for you.
lightfoot2
Republicans are just mean assed fucks.
JohnWickdidnothingwrong
The cruelty is the *point*. It's not dumb, it's evil.
SpammersAreScum
Nah, let him keep McD's; it can't be good for his health.
camn333
People: why are millionaires wasting money on such stupid crap?
GOP: it's their money! They can spend it whoever they want!!!!1!1
Also GOP: why are poor people spending money on soda?

The point of snap is to be supplemental. So i get it on one hand. Its there to help buy healthy foods, not 'junk' foods or fast food. OTH you are giving resources to people and putting strings on it can be unfair.
djhash
Sooo.. you can buy sugar, flour, yeast, and gelatin with snap, but when you combine them in bakery you can't?
PandaStonetree
Same with Hot foods. Normally one cannot use EBT for things like fastfood, or even a full size heated/cooked chicken from the deli. Changes had been made in the past 10 years, but this is now undoing those changes.

Yeah, when I was homeless I'd get a custom sandwich from the deli, and SNAP would cover it just fine. But if I ask them toast that exact same sandwich? Suddenly SNAP won't cover it bc the label says it's hot food. Most deli clerks were chill tho and would juat put the cold sandwich sticker on if I asked, but it really does suck being homeless on a freezing cold wet day and being unallowed to legally buy a hot meal. It's just cruelty

Monthly drug testing for the President, Vice President, all members of the House, all the Secretaries, etc. would likely do more good.
RetiredLaserMan
That and maybe don't let felons hold office...
woozle
I don't give a flying fuck what people buy with SNAP. I can't stand this bullshit and controlling what people eat.
laotzu42
I'm a SNAP recipient and if the government is going to enact new distribution requirements for SNAP funds, perhaps they should give me a little more so I can actually afford to eat actually healthy foods.
Targe0
They want to axe SNAP, but they can't politically.
So instead they want to make it so restrictive that people can't functionally use it for anything.
Exyr
How in the fuck are they going to enforce that? In california you cant use snap to buy hot food and thats easily enforced because hot food is taxed. If its taxed no snap. Prepared cold foods are not taxed. Meaning you can use it. How you going to differentiate between coca cola and herbal tea?
djhash
There are already other restrictions and they do it via their UPCs. At the end, the register splits the total cost to SNAP + non-snap. You pay snap portion with snap, then rest with your debit card.
whiskeywonka
The same way it works that it doesnt cover hot foods. The item has a specific bar code. Decades ago we were on snap, and like you said, no hot foods. But also couldn't buy like a sponge or a broom. The bar code on the item has a ton of info for what the item is (well it indexes to the database that has it) and even QR codes are starting to be used in places. Not advocating for either way, just supplying info.
Exyr
My point is what's junk food? If its taxed vs non tax thats one thing. Is herbal tea junk food? If its not why not? It has more sugar than soda. Oh its carbonated...so is tonic water junk food? How is it enforced? Do they have a list of what's is junk food by brand and product?
whiskeywonka
I agree. Just basing it off sugar or carbonation is very capricious. Back in my day foods had to ask to be WIC available. I do not know when that changed as we only used the program for like a year. As for the health value of specific foods? Maybe we need some testing and guidelines to figure out whats what. I know *my* opinion on that is very biased based on how specific food effect my self and my wife. Other people are different and will react to the same foods differently.
Kotarisu
WIC is a more restricted program than the general SNAP program, so it has very specific products and quantities that are permitted.
