I am by no reach a computer designer but if anyone wants to join me and make a computer that just installs what its told im game
i love my laptop. i love gaming. so trying to clear space i look an oh two types of candy crush and 20 other apps i don't want? i'm gonna dump em. oh nope you can't! i miss the older days. it's my system, i'll load what i want
Billie2feathers
Who down votes this idea?
DonKeedik
It sorta sounds like you're just complaining without a proper understanding of how to fix your issue. Listen to the people here
likehelly
windows doesn't stop you from deleting any apps.
MrBigMcLargeHuge
It just re-installs them every update without asking you
Lifeon18wheels
You know you can change what windows is allowed to update right
NaughtButOne
I've been using Windows 10 since launch and have never encountered this.

Windirstat can help with cleaning up programs and files on your computer. Lays it out nicely for you, color coded, and doesn’t usually fail
ihaveblunderedyetagain
This is why you pirate windows or struggle through linux.
armandraynal
Struggle? GNU/Linux is easier to use than windows if you don't have specific needs. Distros like Manjaro are very user friendly.
revelator
Manjaro is my main OS, & I think Windows is much easier for those who aren't tech savvy.

Uh, don’t remove the store though. Can’t get it back

You can restore the store if you want, it's arduous but doable.

This is entirely untrue. Microsoft hosts all their apps on their site none can ever be lost that a redownload cant fix. Source: Ive done it

TheBlueMuppet
Then its not gone, its just hidden.

No it is a new feature they put in specifically to install.the store once it has been completely removed. You could always hide and unhide i

Games from the Microsoft store like sea of thieves. That would 100% break. If that's not as important though, then I dunno.
KnightThatDrinksTea
and after you got rid of them, there is a windows update and *poof* there they are again.
kruug
Because a major version update is essentially a clean install. With how intertwined Windows is, it’s the cleanest way.

Linux gives you the power to delete anything you want, and wreck your system doing it.

A new Linux install is easier to use than Windows these days. Also, Steam, Minecraft, and a ton of games run on it.
dietderpsy
Yet you still have to hit the command line.
Inimposter
League of legends - no, it's straight up easier to learn to dual boot and keep windows around just to run LoL.
JordD04
Not everything on Steam will run on Linux, even with proton. For a gamer, Windows is still the best OS.
Oscill8s
The only game in my rather large Steam library that doesn't run on Linux is Space Engineers.
JordD04
I don't run Linux but going off of this site, there do seem to be problems: https://www.protondb.com
Oscill8s
Well it's certainly not perfect; a more ideal solution would be for game publishers to provide supported Linux native binaries, but--
akahata
Every game will run on Linux, except the one you want to play NOW.
industin
Exactly. I'd LOVE to switch to linux. But im still a gamer about half my games aren't supported the last time I checked.
ladyatlas777
But it's different and ppl would have to learn something. Oh noes....
dietderpsy
If I'm an accountant or designer I don't want to learn endless commands just to use my machine. Apple and Microsoft got it right.
Valavuo
also there's the fact that Linux has less of everything and you have to get used to being limited in many ways when you use it.
JapAnus
That's not really true
Valavuo
Haven't used Linux in like 5 years but I don't believe they have yet caught up with Windows and MacOS in terms of ease of use.
Inimposter
Depends. I'm not saying it's plug-n-play but Windows will regularly fuck you over. Also plenty of stable distros around.
JapAnus
Linux surpassed those
Valavuo
It didn't. "oh snap, this specific game doesn't work because this specific GPU this and that yada yada." That's what Linux is like.
JeanLucPicard
Linux has definitely surpassed them. And with all the different flavours of linux, you can choose the one that matches you best.
Valavuo
No, they really haven't. I cannot use a Linux distro without constantly having to tweak shit.
OneNeoEon
i loathe bloatware. i hate it is so damn common on phones.
Quizz25S

Linux is great for lots of things. Gaming is absolutely not one of them.

That’s not true. Sure, you can run wine or emulators, but games perform better on windows, and they require no technical skill to run.
[deleted]

MaxZimuss
Thanks! I’m actually very comfortable with Linux. I was a Unix admin for a few years. My point was that gaming is better on windows....
MaxZimuss
“Most” being the optimistic key word there. Now show me your FPS in Linux vs windows, on the same hardware. Don’t get me wrong....
MaxZimuss
I like Linux. It’s just not being honest to say it’s as good at windows for 99.99999999% of pc gamers.
ocegur
Wrong, I and many others play only on Linux. Thousands of games run perfectly well. What's true is that there are less games. See
MaxZimuss
Ok cool. I’m aware gaming is possible on Linux. It’s just better on windows. That’s just the reality of it. EVERY game runs on windows.
ocegur
Well that's obviously not true, some games are Linux only. But yes there are much more games on Windows, especially big budgets ones.
MaxZimuss
I am sure some games are exclusive to virtually every computing platform in history. But, ALL mainstream PC games are on windows.
ilhares
There are fewer games, true, but there's been a lot of progress on that front in the last decade. I can only imagine another decade.
ocegur
Yes hopefully cloud gaming that is Linux based will convince devs to use compatible libraries.
ilhares
I'd much prefer linux-based gaming that has zero to do with 'the cloud'.

It‘s the dark souls of operating systems: Brutal, unforgiving and needs more than an hour to get used to, but once you do it the best!
ocegur
Dark Souls games run very well on Linux. Playing the first currently.
armandraynal
Am using strictly GNU/Linux and I play games, it's really better than ever now, check this out, OC and game
Valavuo
I've heard this comment countless times the last two decades and every time Linux has failed my expectations.
dietderpsy
I've been using Linux since Redhat 3, I share the same sentiment.
montyman185
There are some fairly user friendly distros now, and with steam has a thing for game compatibility now. Still many games don't work though
jinbee
Linux mint and Ubuntu are pretty damn good for people who just want something that works.
Kenona
Linux is very user friendly. Its just very picky about who its friends are.
ocegur
Ubuntu or Mint are as easy as Windows, maybe more. As for games, there are thousands working now, search in https://protondb.com
ocegur
Fix https://www.protondb.com/
TheWhiteBarry
Try lutris, a lot of games run really well on it
Valavuo
Or just use W10 and don't think about anything. These W10 apps are a minor inconvenience compared to shit Linux would put one through.
TheWhiteBarry
"don't think" is the worst possible advice you can give someone, this applies to literally everything forever. Always think.
Valavuo
What I meant with that is that it isn't necessary to think about anything because everything just works most of the time.
ocegur
Or just Steam, since Proton, thousands of game run from Steam with 0 tweaks.
JeanLucPicard
Since steam machine is linux based, a lot of games have been made to work on linux. Also some distros are designed to look a lot like 1/2
JeanLucPicard
Windows or like macOS does that users don’t have to change everything they know to switch. 2/2
JHawke
Well, your choices are to either lock yourself into a a system that keeps getting more and more.. obtuse. Or get used to things being >
JHawke

JHawke
> and more just as recent examples) I can update and install everything in just a single command line. Or by ticking a few checkboxes. And >
JHawke
> at .. ten thousand ish games I might miss specific ones, but I'm hardly bored.
Valaerys6
Which one do you recommend for someone who's only ever used Windows? The choices are overwhelming so I just gave up.
armandraynal
Go for Manjaro, Xfce if your PC is old/weak, KDE or gnome if it's decent. Easiest distro ever, installed it for a few friends they all happy
minkfarm
Xfce looks like win 3.11
JHawke
Depends on what you do, as would the level of sacrifise, ranging from not missing anything at all. To having to adapt a whole new workflow.
Valaerys6
Win10 was the worst for me. Downgraded to win7, but they've discontinued support. Light use, no games. Send help!
Ironbunny
I like and use Linux, but gaming isn't viable unless your favorite games are one of the like...6 compatible ones
JHawke
"6" Ye sure, it's "only" over 10k, it's only more than all major consoles COMBINED.
Spodah
The number of games I've tried to run on linux and couldn't get to work(either natively or through wine) is like 3. 1/
Spodah
And that's with vanilla wine, no dxvk or proton.
Ironbunny
Working and working well are different. Which games did you try that worked well natively?
Spodah
Most of the ones that have native ports and I've actually played work well. Of course, I have a last-gen AMD GPU and newest kernel,/
Spodah
which I'm sure is a massive help, since I hear Nvidia's drivers aren't as good, and AMD's drivers for new cards tend to be a mess.
YoungCore
Look up "windows 10 decrapifier" it's a powershell script that can remove everything that you dont want on your machine.
DoorCellar
Cool story. Next time become a "computer designer" instead of butt a pre-built and you'll discover it's not Microsoft Windows that does this
alexiselizabethxo
It is actually windows though. Depending on what version of windows 10 you get bloatware. Only way to permanently remove it is power shell.
Richter12x2
It's that damned U2 album

TheLateKnight
.
kruug
Yeah, that one is kind of the nuclear option. While it removes bloat, it removes too much and has the potential to cause worse issues later
DocTanner
It's not Microsoft that does that. It's your PC manufacturer. A pure Windows install has a couple of things that you can easily uninstall.
gaidinbdj
Yep. Windows 10 OEM disc installed no games at all.
DocTanner
Mine definitely _did_ install some stuff, like folks are complaining about. But they were easily removed and stayed gone.
Tarmaccian
It’s both now. Microsoft started pushing crap automatically via the Windows store a few years ago. They’re uninstallable, though.
DocTanner
Exactly. They're easily uninstallable. Those aren't what we're talking about here.
Splosions
Candy Crush, Disney games, Xbox toolbar....no that shit is default
DevonGronka
Yeah. HP and Dell are awful about this. Or at least they were. I have stuck to Asus and building my own PC for the last decade just bc of it
PickledOpinions
I build my own computers and I still get that shit. I'm sure it comes with windows
DocTanner
Is everyone just ignoring my last sentence? Yes, there's some pre-installed bloat. And you can easily remove it again.
PickledOpinions
I'm not disagreeing with you, just adding my experience. And thanks for the tip.
RogerSmithIsMySpiritAnimal
Since when does 10+ games and 15 apps count as a couple??
DocTanner
I built a new PC just a couple months ago. I think I had to uninstall all of four apps.
RogerSmithIsMySpiritAnimal
I just reinstalled Win10 1909 in the past 2 weeks. It’s way more than 4 apps/games.
LMTMFA
Nein.
Gayforbae
Nope. We build workstation servers with windows 10 at work. Load win 10 ourselves. Still have to delete garbage immediatelyAnd its difficult

How is "opening the add/remove programs app and clicking uninstall" difficult?
Gayforbae
It doesnt want to remove EVERYTHING that is included in those files and we have to remove it all.

Candy crush and something else installed on all my clean installs, home and pro. They also uninstalled by one click so.. *shrug.*
valen00

I clicked uninstall so I assumed it was gone. Do tell where to find it on C: if they still stick around; I'm curious.
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
Two clicks and it's uninstalled. And I haven't seen it back.

DrDefenestrator
Mmmhmm
DrDefenestrator
I've never had it on any install. My "disks" are from the early days of Win10. Maybe that makes a difference?
titaniumsnail
That might be why. You're lucky not to have the code snippet that says "Install this and that".
DocTanner
As I said: "A pure Windows install has a couple of things that you can easily uninstall." They don't try to stop you from removing it.
gandraw
If you uninstall the MS crapware then the computer won't sysprep anymore.
BunnyBooBear69
People still sysprep? People still use golden images?? Powershell, my friend.

You're installing an outdated build.

You want to upgrade to 8 at the least so you're getting security patches. Else the hackers are going to own you after they pick 7 apart
MarkPenrice
They've had 13 years to do that. What happened to XP post support end? Uh, some ransomware attacks that required the user being dumb enough
MarkPenrice
to click an obvious-as-all-hell link in a spam email. The details for most of the updates over the last couple years - when I could even get
MarkPenrice
Windows Update to work properly and install the bloody things in the first place - have often been a case of "really, they bothered to
MagnorCriol
I’m on Win10 and it doesn’t have any of these uninstallable games on my machine. So far I’ve found 10 to be just fine.
MarkPenrice
My experience with it has been very variable, and I even had a certificate somewhere showing that I allegedly know how to install and
MarkPenrice
maintain it (... I know powershell was involved somewhere?). It's not universally bad, but on balance, and having seen how bad it CAN be,
MarkPenrice
I'd rather steer clear if I can at all help it. Consider it as yet another example of the good-bad Windows release cycle, maybe.
MarkPenrice
(98SE good, ME bad, 2k/XP good, Vista bad, 7 good, 8.0 bad, 8.1 goodish?, 10 badish?, next release ... who knows)
vudak
Same, sticking with 7atm. In the process of backing up eeeverything - if it gets fucked, meh - clean install whatever win7/10 is good then.
MarkPenrice
Prob is I don't think I've got the spare capacity to do a half-terabyte backup right now. Gotta find money to buy a new ext HDD.
MarkPenrice
...suppose I could delete one of the older images maybe.
MarkPenrice
Or perhaps, bizarrely, this will be the one thing that finally drives me to switch to Linux, after nearly 3 decades of being happy w/Windows
Zetor
You mean Linux?
secondtalon
"Hey, I have this problem with my car.." "Just get a truck lol" "Yeah, thanks for not being helpful, jackass."
armandraynal
Getting a truck will be pricey. Replacing windows by GNU/Linux is gratis, and will get you total control, privacy, stability, security ...
nullbr
I would love an open source Truck
MagnorCriol
“Just get Linux” would be more like “just get the parts for a motorcycle, and put it together yourself”
secondtalon
You're not wrong.
hadtodownvote1
Not wrong 20 years ago, but very wrong now. There are some extremely userfriendly GNU/Linux distributions
armandraynal
If by "Linux" you just mean the kernel, indeed, you'd have to code all the rest of the system, but thank god there's GNU/Linux dsitributions
beauchette
We had a similar case at work, a small windows 10 machine with a small hard drive, and you literally couldnt get rid of candy crush / etc
SnepInTime
Try looking into W10Privacy. I don't know how much I trust it but it gives a nice interface for disabling all that bloat plus other things.
kruug
Join it to a domain. That removes the bloat.
beauchette
well, it wasn't on the domain for a simple reason : it was supposed to be used in chrome kiosk mode to showcase things. 1/?
beauchette
other tings than a windows error message saying there s no space left ^^. so it's a linux now. 2/2
beauchette
I mean showcase things in a place outside our network

WinDirStat. Thank me later.

. I think I want this. Abt the hibernation.
GooseNipples8
cmd as admin. powercfg /h off (Disables hibernation, which almost no one uses, removes hiberfil.sys which is same size as your RAM)
GooseNipples8
If you've recently updated your version of Windows (presumably 10) you can remove the Windows.old folder at root of C: using cleanmgr /d c:
GooseNipples8
Select the previous windows installation(s) folder. You can also remove all but the most recent backup/shadow copy on the more options tab
GooseNipples8
And to all the people saying simply "Linux, hur dur" get off your fucking high horse. Regardless of what they would have you believe, Linux
GooseNipples8
IS a lot more work, harder to maintain/run than Windows, unless you're just surfing the web and doing basic Office app type work.
